I want to get a surprise gift for my nephew but don't know where to start. I want to get him something to where he can plug into his computer, mix beats, record his mixes, etc. Can anybody recommend software, mixers, drum machine, turntables, miscellaneous items that would be required to do this? Brands preferred? I'm willing to spend some $$.

Numark mix track 2
Cheap
Should be able to tell if you have it in you with it. If you don't you won't be out of a lot of $$

If you're willing to spend $$ then you're talking thousands of dollars. Technics 1200 direct drive (2) plus add another $1500 for a mixer.

How old is this nephew?

Some of the suggestions in here are pretty expensive.

He is 15, he's a great kid and loves music and does beats with his hands. He is having a pretty rough go at school, nerdy kid and makes great grades, is in some Georgia Tech pre engineering program but gets picked on very badly and really doesn't have any friends. I'm willing to drop some coin to lift his spirits a bit.

That's pretty cool of you.

I post on another forum and I'm pretty sure a guy on there is selling a good amount of his gear. If not, someone on there can help you get some stuff.

I'll post on there tonight or send him a pm/email about it. The forum has way less activity than here so it won't be a response right away

Buy a DJ controller. Search on amazon between the price ranges of 300-600. Anything cheaper than 300 is probably going to suck.

Professional DJs spin using CDJs but as others have said it's very expensive to buy those. The standard in clubs is the CDJ-2000 which costs 1700 each. Of course you need 2 so you can mix one track into another. Then you would have to buy a mixer (ie DJM 800) and that'll run you another 2 grand. The controller can do all of that for you and connects to almost any laptop. It's perfect for a beginner. If he gets really into it and good at it, then he can graduate to more expensive equipment.

Sounds like a Scott Storch in the making. Get him the right equipment now. If he puts the time in and gets good enough at it to start doing parties and crap, he can be the DJ at his high school events possibly and start getting loads of tail.

I'm thinking about selling my NS6, as I don't use it very often. Let me know if interested. It's in good shape.

I use 2 different contollers. A Behringer Mirco CMD for my decks and basic controls I don't scratch so this is perfect for me to beat match with. I also use an Akai MPD 24 pad for setting hot cues, loops, FX and most importantly mixing. Since I don't have have an external mixer ($$$) I use the internal with Traktor which seems to be going fine so far. I hope to upgrade later

Sup Moon.

I agree the NS6 are a great intro option. The pioneer decks get too much love IMO, non rotating platters, sync button, outer ring for speed adjustment. Thats all fail IMO, can't believe so many people use them.

NS7 controller or separates are an affordable option that mimic 1200's and feel more like the real thing.

If the vinyl feel isnt a necessity I have a denon rack mountable setup i can part with cheap.

How much are/were you looking to spend op?
