Wireless electric dog fence question.

I'm moving and the new place doesn't have a fence. Anybody ever use one of those wireless electric fences? If so how long did it take to train your dog?

My brother put it in his back yard. Roughly 2 acres. He kept the flags up that they put out which outlined the fence. After two weeks he took them out. His dog only got shocked twice that he saw and has been fine since. His actually beeps before the dogs hits the line giving it a buffer zone to let the dog know. He's got a German short hair pointer fwiw. Very smart hunting dog

With a bigger dog does it actually stop them or if they are dopey enough can they just run right through

They will continue to get shocked. That's why it's important to keep those flags up for a few weeks. Then start taking a couple away a little at a time expanding the distance between each flag. They'll get the idea it's funny now with my brothers dog when we play fetch and u throw it about 5 yards away from the line his dog will just look at u with that "oh frick you dude" look

We have a Petsafe one for our boxer and it works great. That fugger knows he can sneak off when we forget to put his collar on.

My parents have an electric fence and it seems to work well for the smaller dogs but not as much for the larger dogs. They have 2 80 lb mutts and they will just run right through it. Problem is they often are hesitant to run through it again and get stuck on the outsode.

With the PetSafe one, it beeps when they get close and before delivering a shock.

I am concerned because my big mutt is so dumb. I don't want him to get zapped and not understand what is happening. In all seriousness, the vet says he has some type of developmental disability. His only saving grace is he is fiercely defensive of the family. It's all he knows.

A friend of mine has a border collie. At first the dog would say frick it and take the shock to get out but not come back in. When he would return he would wait at the fence. The smart SOB finally figured out he could stand by the fence and make the collar beep until the battery was dead. Then proceed with his day roaming around.

Sounds like the perfect candidate for shock therapy.

For the most part it kept my boxers in but sometimes they would get a running start and they were gone. Boxers are extremely hard headed. I have a catahoula now and he is giving them a run for their money in hard headedness.

Did you put the flags out and then work with them or did you just let them figure it out themselves?

you have to work with them for a few days
mine keeps my bloodhound in the yard and she is the Webster definition of hard headed
turn the collar up to deep-fat fry and walk the dog to the flags on a leash. Let the dog get a jolt, then do it again in another part of the yard a few hours later
do that for three or four days and they'll figure it out. Mine doesn't even wear the collar anymore

Let them work it out on their own. I had very little sympathy for them Jerry's kids motherfrickers. They were determined to learn everything the hard way anyway.
