Guy at my old unit was killed today in a training accident, trying to find the story and ran across this. Had some friends in this guy's unit and between them and the 24th they are absolutely fricking elite.
quote:
In March 2013, Sheridan was preparing for a mission with his Army Special Forces team when an Afghan National Police Officer working with the team opened fire from a machine gun at 25 feet. The teammates to Sheridan's immediate left and right were hit.
Puffs of smoke blew up around him. When he realized what was happening, his first instinct was to grab his team leader and get him out, he said.
As he turned to react, Sheridan saw his team leader shot in the head at close range.
At the same time, a group of about 20 insurgents fired on the team from a position outside of the base in what was a coordinated attack.
To Sheridan the insider attack was like "having someone sneak into your house in the middle of the night." It provoked an instantaneous reaction.
He ran toward the shooter, jumped into the turret of an armored vehicle and shot him twice with his pistol and nine times with an M4 rifle.
One by one, he dragged his team leader, team sergeant and the infantry squad noncommissioned officer in charge to an area where they could be extracted by medevac.
Sheridan, 33, called in six medevac flights and helped transfer his wounded teammates to litters while controlling aircraft overhead.

Straight up baller, sorry about the loss of your friend.

I'm not sure I even knew him, names not released yet and buddy hasn't gotten back to me. It's a smaller unit though that did Aeromedical Evacuation so it's got the family feel to it.

Sorry to hear it brother. Was it at Bragg/Pope?

Haha nah, we are the far less hard core version. They grab them from the battlefield bring them back to the nearest base, we move them forward from there providing medical care throughout the flight. Either to the bigger bases in theatre or further back to Germany/stateside

So sorry bro. Saw that on the Army Times this week.
From the Fayetteville Observer.

Rest in Peace brother.

Thanks for the link buddy. I am unsure what happened, but I already know it was a senseless tragedy. The Humvees are simply used to transport equipment maybe a mile to and from the flight line. I have no idea how this could have possibly happened.
Bragg is such a dangerous damn base though. Seems like every major training op the airborne units do someone passes away.

I own a home in Fayetteville. The majority of my career has been at Bragg (currently a geo bach at Gordon). I was thinking the same thing, trying to figure out how it happened. I am here for the weekend. Will try to find out from friends what happened.
Again, my sympathies with you. My oldest son is older than your friend. A tragedy.

My nephew was in the USAF SOCOM and got the Silver Star in Iraq; he's now a combatant in the fight against the VA.

Tough fight, find a way for him to get his story public. Somehow they will find a magic way to help him thereafter. ET Al broken wheel chair in Lowe's.
