Anyone ever had a homemade trailer inspected and stamped?

I had my guys do some work on a house for a widow woman that really couldn't afford it. She had a utility trailer rusting away that I traded her for instead. She says her husband built it and never registered it. Just used it around town on the backroads and around the house. This seems to be true because I can't find a stamp anywhere on it.

Just wondering if it's going to be difficult to get registered before I spend any money repainting it and it needs new boards and tires too. I figure it'll cost about $500 to redo but the same size trailers retail for about $1500. It's a 6'x12' utility tilt trailer.

My concern is signing the affidavit the State Police want you to have notarized when I didn't actually build the thing.

How hard are they to deal with on this?

TIA

It helps to know a State Trooper when getting it stamped. Problem is going to be that you don't have any paperwork from buying the material to build the trailer. I would get a bill of sale from the lady stating that he husband built it. Get that notarized.

That's a good idea.

I had one registered, but I had receipts for an axle, tires coupler, lights, etc. plus a bill of sale for a "trailer frame". I was told they were primarily interested in the receipt for the axle. I got all the parts needed including the axle for a little over $200 at Herb's on Plank.

They require this now.

Buy axle, get trailer stamped, return axle for refund - win?
