In an effort to convince Christians to convert to Islam it seems that these Islamist are using a tried and true program to convince them.

quote:

"We offer them three choices: Islam; the dhimma contract - involving payment of jizya; if they refuse this they will have nothing but the sword"

I don't know, but I would think that this would be a fairly compelling argument to join the religion of free will.

Of course you could always opt to give 'em the jizya.

The best solution is to dig up Saddam, re-animate his corpse and let him re-conquer that country.

Some of the less evolved animals of the world should have sufficiently capable zoo-keepers.

Classic version. Read R. Spencer's "The Myth of Islamic Tolerance". Religion of peace.

And you can keep your doctor.

Iraq's Supreme Court will rule it a tax. So it's all cool and legal.

For those who don't know, "dhimmi" is the status of protected religious minority. Jews and Christians have been allowed to have this title because they are "people of the book" while pagan or atheist individuals were typically just given the convert or die choice.

Dhimmi groups are allowed to practice their religion and have places of worship; the one stipulation I can recall is that a synagogue or church cannot be taller than the local mosque.

Jizya is just a religious tax to make up for religious minorities not paying the zakat, which is Islam's version of tithing. The tax has typically been fairly low but still, it's an unfair practice targeting those who are not Islamic.

Mosul, once home to diverse faiths, had a Christian population of around 100,000 a decade ago, but waves of attacks on Christians since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion to topple Saddam Hussein have seen those numbers collapse.

The resident of Mosul who saw the Islamic State announcement estimated the city's Christian population before last month's militant takeover at around 5,000. The vast bulk of those have since fled, leaving perhaps only 200 in the city, he said.

Unbelievable.

It's a very sad situation. The Christians of Iraq didn't support Saddam because they thought he was a swell guy... It's just that he was the only thing keeping them from annihilation.

What's worse is that these people are actually the original people of Northern Iraq. The Assyrians and Chaldeans of Iraq have gotten the shaft, now there are very few left in their homeland.
