July 17, 2014 – NASA astronaut Henry "Hank" Hartsfield, who in 1984 commanded the maiden mission of the space shuttle Discovery, died on Thursday (July 17). He was 80.
Hartsfield's death came as a result of complications from back surgery he had several months ago, according to his fellow astronaut and STS-41D crewmember Mike Mullane.
"Obviously, I have many, many memories of my time with Hank," Mullane wrote online on Thursday. "He was a great commander and pilot and I'll always feel honored to have been a member of his crew."

RIP. I have a huge amount of admiration for astronauts. Some of the smartest people our country produces.

Don't want to broach blasphemy, but these men should be as treasured as any of our war vets. They are a dying breed who accomplished wonders for our nation and mankind.
Even the Air Force ones.

I was a fan of the astronauts growing up. The word "hero" is tossed about too much, but these guys fit the bill. One part soldier/sailor/airman/marine, one part egghead scientist/engineer and one part rock star.
RIP wing wiper.

People just don't realize what kind of men and women make up the Astronaut Corps. They are a rare, rare brand.

Hartsfield was also an Auburn grad and was the pilot for STS-4 in 1982 with fellow alum Ken Mattingly.

I've had a couple of former astronauts work for me, it's a roll of the dice as to how that translates to their new job.
