Is Nick Saban worth $100 million? Texas apparently thought so.

Texas was prepared to offer Alabama coach Nick Saban a contract worth $100 million to coach the Longhorns, Paul Finebaum of the SEC Network writes in his new book.

In Finebaum's book with Gene Wojciechowski, "My Conference Can Beat Your Conference," Finebaum writes: "Texas was dead serious about trying to money-whip Saban. Depending on who you talk to -- Bama big hitters or Texas big hitters -- the Longhorns were prepared to give Saban somewhere between a $12 million and $15 million signing bonus and a salary package worth $100 million [plus performance bonuses]."
Money-whip

Nick Saban is the GOAT so yes

Texas should be glad he turned them down, in that case. That's just insane.

He would've been worth it, yes.

And why is that?
Just because idiots call into his show doesn't mean he's an idiot.

I find it exceptionally hard to believe he turned down at least 50 million dollars.

Well, he doesn't cite a source other than "big hitters." And then, he doesn't say who provided him the ultimate information. Was it a Texas big hitter or an Alabama big hitter that revealed the details of this package to Finebaum?
I'm more apt to believe it's the latter.

Prob worth more than that

Would that have made him the highest paid coach in the country in any sport?

That sounds like a fantastically stupid amount of money to pay any CFB coach. Looks like Saban saved UT from a big mistake.

Alabama has brought in hundreds of millions that they otherwise would not have if not for Saban.

Not sure he's WORTH it, as I think the UT athletic department is already bringing in as much as they can and bringing in Saban doesn't up that amount enough to pay for his contract.
But that's not something the big money donors worry about, they just sign checks to make it happen.

How do you calculate that? What was Bama's athletic department bringing in before Saban got there? Honest question, I really have no idea.
I do know that UT has no problems putting butts in seats on Saturdays during the fall, regardless of how mediocre they've been as of late. And they have no problems raising money. I'm not understanding how paying Saban 9 figures would have made sound financial sense for UT.
ETA: what Atari said.
Also, would he actually coach another 7 years had he gone to UT?

Yeah, unless he's talking about academic donations, I don't see (based on a quick scan of the always reliable Internet) how the Saban Effect has been worth "hundreds of millions of dollars".
For one thing, the Alabama program makes a lot but they also spend a lot. Unlike LSU, the university actually kicks in some money for the athletic side.
Also, while, yeah, revenues have been soaring, they've been doing that for most of the other majors as well. The rising tide (no pun intended) is lifting all boats. And Texas does seem to be tapped out on just how much more money they can get.

quote:Shula years: about $50 million per year. Saban years: about $80 million per year. And that's mostly endorsement and tv deals, and merchandising. Ticket prices have increased a little, and the stadium has expanded. But Bama still sold out every single game before Saban, so that's not where the biggest difference is.
What was Bama's athletic department bringing in before Saban got there?
But, we have to go much deeper. Alabama has become a national brand. Alabama's out-of-state enrollment has SKYROCKETED since Saban arrived. The majority of Alabama's students are now out of state. Can you name any other flagship state school in which that's the case? So that's 15,000 students paying the out-of-state tuition rate (double the in-state rate). That's 100% due to Saban keeping the University of Alabama at the forefront of the nation's consciousness through football.
