In tumours, energy is produced using glycosis - a process that requires less energy and produces lactate as a by-product. Molecules - known as monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs) - are involved in the movement of lactate out of cells.
The drug targets one of these modules - called MCT1 - in lung cancer cells. The study found that this increased the level of lactate in cells and, more importantly, reduced tumour growth.

Great news. Wish they would have found this before my mom died. I miss her.

Does this mean I can keep smoking? I mean, the government is going to pay for all my healthcare anyway. No reason to give up something I enjoy just to be responsible with other people hard earned tax dollars right?

Lots of people who have never smoked get lung cancer even early in life, kids included.

This in the U.K., not in the U.S. Probably won't see this treatment in the U.S. anytime soon. Cancer is a big money making industry in the U.S.

While not the greatest thing to say it is somewhat accurate. So if we could reduce lung cancer by 90% it would become a very very rare form of cancer.

Per CDC:
Cigarette smoking is the number one risk factor for lung cancer. In the United States, cigarette smoking causes about 90% of lung cancers. Using other tobacco products such as cigars or pipes also increases the risk for lung cancer. Tobacco smoke is a toxic mix of more than 7,000 chemicals. Many are poisons. At least 70 are known to cause cancer in people or animals.
