People who say they are concerned about climate change use more electricity than those who say the issue is 'too far away to worry about', government-commissioned study finds

quote:

Those who say they are concerned about the prospect of climate change consume more energy than those who say it is “too far into the future to worry about,” the study commissioned by the Department for Energy and Climate Change found.
That is in part due to age, as people over 65 are more frugal with electricity but much less concerned about global warming.

However, even when pensioners are discounted, there is only a “weak trend” to show that people who profess to care about climate change do much to cut their energy use.

The findings were based on the Household Electricity Survey, which closely monitored the electricity use and views of 250 families over a year. The report, by experts from Loughborough University and Cambridge Architectural Research, was commissioned and published by DECC.

quote:

The researchers wrote: “Taken all together, householders who strongly agreed they were not worried about climate change because it was too far in the future in fact used less electricity rather than more, counter to the hypothesis that households concerned about climate change use less electricity.

“However, we found this was largely due to the effect of age, as older households were much more likely to agree with this statement, and also had lower energy consumption.

“When we separated the pensioner households from the younger ones, there was no significant relationship between this statement and energy use in the pensioner group, and only a weak trend among younger households."

The people who drive plug in cars as well never seem to realize that the vast majority of our electrical generation comes from fossil fuels.

It's not just those people, look at all the bike riders who ride around town on their bikes only to come home hot and sweaty and turn that big boy down to cool off.

this is in the UK, so may not apply here.

I will say it makes sense, those who agree with climate change have higher levels of education, more education means more money (usually), more money means more vacations, bigger houses, more gadgets, etc.

Look mofo. I'll have you know.... that most of those people tweeted a hash tag. Some of them several hash tags. Don't you think they've suffered enough already?

One of my favorite convsertations of all time...

Blonde friend: We should drive electric cars. No more fossil fuels!

TA: Where do you think the electricity comes from?

Blonde friend: Out of the wall, duh!

We should ban education.

there is a girl in my apartment complex that has a plug in hybrid with a no nuclear sticker on the back. She was bragging about the car at a party not too long ago and someone asked if she realized that she got the power to run her car from the nuclear power plant @ grand gulf? Her answer was my daddy has solar panels on his roof so she was good. The funny thing is she went to an ivy league school

Thus disproving the science.

Brilliant research AC!

BTW - I'm not going to pay for climate change twice. Let me know when the rest of you want to get on board.

Do they not realize it, or do they realize that power plants are more efficient at converting fossil fuels into usable power than engines are?

Also, electric vehicles don't care how the electricity was generated, so it could be hydro, solar, nuclear, whatever. Electric cars are a necessary first step to long-term energy independence.

Nice to know one can set a limit on what one is willing to pay to avoid a worldwide life altering calamity.

They actively fight the proliferation of nuclear energy which is cheap, harmless and safe (our newest plant is from the 70s)

So in a manner, they keep the coal train rolling while voting for regulations that makes it more expensive. See this is why I hate liberals. For the most part they're too stupid to see that they act against their self interests both real and disingenuous.

Can you provide a link to prove this?

And most people don't doubt climate change. We just don't buy into the claim that it is all man made. We are smart enough to know that higher taxes will not start a cooling process.

Statics could probably show a pretty high correlation, we should make a model!
