unlike displayed on every tv show about Louisiana, we do not have alligators hanging out in out back yard.

however, if you want to drive an hour, pierre part (home of swamp people) and the Atchafalaya basin are only an hour drive away.

Check out Kleiberts Alligator and Turtle Farm in Hammond. It's a walking tour of a working farm. Admission is only $12 and adult and $7 for kids. They have a huge (14ft) gator there called Chopper that the tour guide calls out of the water and interacts with. They also have snakes, nutria rats, rabbits, coons and wild turkeys to see.
If you're bringing a small child , then they have a gator that's taped up that they'll let them "wrestle".

Now Amos Moses is a cajun, he lives by himself in the swamp. He hunts alligators for livin', he just knock 'em in the head with a stump!

Cajun Encounters in Slidell. Well worth the short drive.Request to be on Capt. Dumas' boat or Capt. Walkers boat. Covered boats.

Hey glad I clicked on this thread.. Looking for something for my family too... A walking tour seems better for my family since I have a bunch of small children...

It takes about 40-50 minutes but the guide stops and gives a bunch of facts so it really doesn't seem that long.
