Scoop Jackson on ESPN asked this hypothetical question:
Pretend soccer longer exists. All of the countries in the world have decided to play American Football as their primary sport. How long would it take for them to catch us?

Answer:
Never! We have too much of a head start and football means too much to us to let anyone be better than us.

That's how the major countries in the world feel about soccer. Why do we think we could or should be able to catch them?

The gap between Us and the world as it pertains to American Football is exponentially larger than the gap between us and the world as it pertain to soccer.

What a terrible comparison.

We've already caught up to most of the world and our 16-20 age group is looking to be better than we've ever had.

So it's harder to be an elite football player than a soccer player?

How in the frick do you figure that

I disagree. Overall id say soccer is harder. You are using a part of your body that doesn't have near as much fine motor control. You hear plenty of stories of guys not starting football until high school and still getting drafted. By high school in soccer it's too late to start.

It's a bad comparison. Soccer is about skill, speed and teamwork. Football is that plus size and strength. Not many other countries will ever produce the combination of athlete that America produces in regards to football.

We'll never reach the level of the elites such as Brazil, Germany, Spain, etc.. Never.

But that's ok. They'll never reach the level of a country that we are in not only sports, but basically every other significant category that exists.

true, there is a gap, but has closed considerably and will continue to close....

as i've argued before, soccer will reap the benefits of the fallout of the concussion issue plaguing football... more parents will not allow their kids to play football, and will turn to other sports as a result...

that means better athletes to select from, eventually, along with more interest on the whole in the sport...

we may never grasp the World Cup, but we are improving, and when you add heart and determination, like they displayed in this year's tourney, i can see us making some serious noise in the near future...

The only part of the Europe that can possibly do it is Europe because of their investment in athletics and associated infrastructure.
