What's the Smallest Amp With Which a Bassist Could Get Away Gigging?

I'm looking to start playing again and would hate to buy a practice amp only to need to shortly upgrade again.

So what would be the most inexpensive middle ground solution between something just to practice with a band with but with the slight chance of gigging down the road?

Yea it kinda matters what you are attempting to do, but I play with some friends now doing a lot of different styles, I have been using one of these that I picked up on the cheap and have to say I love it.

LINK

I play a Stingray and Fender J-bass through it and I get a lot of the classic sound I want out of it. Mines 8 years old and I haven't replaced the tubes yet, still sounds great.

Synth pop/rock-type stuff. Empire of the Sun, MGMT, M83, etc.

Probably. Gotta fit into the trunk of my sedan.

Let's just say the more inexpensive, the better!

I think the Fender Rumble 75 would be about right - 75W, 1x12 - I see them used on Musician's Friend for $160 to about $200.

I'm worried that a Rumble 30 - in the same line might get overpowered in some situations - and it's not a significant reduction in price.

Id peruse Craigslist.

For synth stuff you'll need more low end than anything. 2x15 cabinet and a 500 watt solid state, or 100 watt tube amp.

You could get away with a 1x15 cab as well

15 inch speaker will give you the low end you'll need. Stay away from anything 10 inch or 12 inch for bass unless it's a 4x10 cab. But the 15s are better for that style you said. What city are you located around?

BR Craigslist:

have most of this stuff posted separately, but here is everything consolidated.
I'm mostly looking for cash, but I'll entertain trades.

Bass Amps:
Peavey Century $150 - very loud, good as a slave amp for bass or guitar
Peavey "The Bass" Series 400 $150 - extremely loud and amazing for bass or guitar
1x15 peavey cab $100
2x15 extra deep custom built studio cab $150

I play through a genz - benz 1-15 combo. 3-400 watts. It's versatile and lightweight, but plenty of power for pretty much any venue. Has a horn, and a convenient XLR out. EBay, yo. Got it for like $450 new. Think they're about $800 list.

Technically you could run DI with a bass and a cable

The only thing I don't like about eBay is that often your savings disappears due to shipping costs. And amps aren't exactly lightweight (assuming you didn't mean local pick up).

You're talking about basically plugging straight into a venue's PA system? If so, how common is that?

Unfortunately, I don't live near a large city saturated with used musical instruments. I feel like the money spent through gas would eat a large chunk of what I'd save buying used through CL.

You could always get a sansamp DI and use that to play live with the PA system

At that price I couldn't just buy a preamp with a DI with the benefit of using the preamp as a monitor?

Agreed we have one at church, but our bassist only uses it as a monitor. No way it could be used any other way.

I'm sure that's what the OP meant when he said "the more inexpensive...the better".

Used orange terror bass on a 1x15 or 2x15. The terror bass 500 watt can be had for $500

Tone hammer is another great solid state amp.

The sansamp can be bought used for $100-150 thought and would be the cheapest way to achieve what the OP wants with great EQ control.

Buy the sansamp used from eBay if you go that route. Or look at reverb.com. Great prices there too.

They are essentially a foot switch preamp that doubles as a DI and eq for your bass. They work great. Tone hammer makes one like it too. Tone hammer also makes a bass amp as well.
