windows vpn pptp replacement

I am using the internal windows vpn client to connect to a pptp vpn. My issue is that sometimes the vpn disconnects and windows gets locked up and the vpn shows connected, but it really isnt. If I try to disconnect it doesnt do anything and I even found some dos commands to try and flush it out but it still doesnt work. The only way to get the connection back up is to reboot.
So I was wondering if anyone knows of a software vpn client that I can install that would allow me to create the same pptp connection like I have using the internal windows vpn, but hopefully be more stable.
We are connecting to someone else and they chose pptp, so until i can talk them out of using pptp, Ill have to deal with this issue or find another software that is hopefully more stable than what is included in windows.
