Snag with Asik trade?

Houston reportedly agreed before the draft to trade Asik to the Pelicans for a future first-round pick. The deal was slated to become official after the July moratorium, which ended last night.
At the time the trade was agreed upon, it wasn’t exactly clear how New Orleans would clear the cap space to absorb Asik, who has a cap number of $8,374,646. It seemed simple enough, though.
The Pelicans could waive the unguaranteed contracts of Melvin Ely and Luke Babbitt, use the stretch provision on Austin Rivers , Alexis Ajinca and Jeff Withey (even after his salary became $100,000 guaranteed July 6) and renounce all their free agents, and they’d have enough room based on the projected salary cap to take Asik – with $32,772 to spare below their post-trade team-salary limit ($100,00 above the salary cap).
Maybe New Orleans didn’t want to dump Rivers, Ajinca and Withey for no return. But the Pelicans could, theoretically, at least assure Houston they’d take such measures if no trades emerged.
However, the actual salary cap came in $135,000 lower than the projected salary cap. Suddenly, that $32,772 room for error is gone.
Now, that set of transactions leaves New Orleans $102,228 shy of having enough room for the trade.

Not a snag. We were never going to dump assets to create enough cap space to absorb Asik. That gets rid of all of your bench player and costs you the MLE. The path to Asik has always been making it a 3way trade where all we have to do is send out about $5.5 million in contracts.

we weren't ever going to do that

So do you think its not going to happen?

It's happening, but the specific mechanism this article is focused on was never the mechanism we were going to use to get Asik. Luke Babbit and his voidable contract appears to be gone despite being on the Summer League roster. That points to one of 2 things happening soon.
1) Trade Rivers + Melvin Ely + Babbit + another scrub (Ajinca?) to a 3rd team, hopefully for a future 1st
2) Sign and Trade Smith/Aminu/Roberts + Ely + Babbit to a 3rd team

With the premium being placed on shooting around the league I would not be surprised if Babbitt has been traded. Say to Miami for a future 1st. How much worse is Babbitt than an injured Mike Miller?

We just can't catch a break

That article is so flawed. I cannot see how his numbers even work unless he is not accounting properly for the cap holds on the empty roster spots.

I just went and checked the numbers and to take Asik in with cap room only requires cutting all ties to FAs and dumping Rivers. I get $8,570,481
in cap space after dumping Rivers. So yes, this article is not only wrong in it's focus, it's also wrong on it's facts.
Gordon $14,898,958
Evans $11,265,416
Holiday $10,404,495
Anderson $8,491,500
Davis $5,607,240
Withey $816,482
Ajinca $981,084
Hold $507,336
Hold $507,336
Hold $507,336
Hold $507,336

Total $54,494,519

Eric Gordon had better sacrifice himself at the alter of pierre. I'd seriously take a first and any player with a pulse, not named Brian Roberts.

quote:You can dump Withey (except $100,000 which is guaranteed I think) and add 2 cap holds (have to be at 12 spots). That should get it back close to the number the article was trying to get to (although they were using the stretch provisions and assuming the player contracts disappeared I think).

But Asik slides into that 12th spot so the hold disappears or is applied towards him, so you really only need 11 holds.
