Do people thanking you for your service make you uncomfortable?
I know a guy who was in the night stalkers who says he appreciates it but wishes people wouldn't do it.

Thoughts?

No. People want to do something. In some cases, they served or had loved ones that served. In those situations, you are a proxy for their former comrades or their loved ones.

If they neither served, nor had close family members serve, they are thanking you for serving and giving them and their loved ones the option not to.

In any event, I take it in the spirit in which it is intended. I've served and in uniform, I understand that service will be recognized.

I'm never uncomfortable but a lot of times I really don't know what to say back.

I definitely appreciate it, but sometimes think I haven't done enough to deserve it. I'd rather them thank somebody who does.

I never stand up when places do the vets please stand up thing. Its mainly because I dont want to he associated with the arse hats who shoe horn in they are in military every chance they get and expect special treatment. I also dont do the standing ovation when military gets brought out during a timeout just in case that person is the glory hog type

The guy I know works for the same company I do but in TN. Trust is a big deal with our clients. He won't mention his service (he was a ranger before becoming a night stalker) but I think he should find a way to at least bring it up. Worst case is it usually leads to a conversation about his service, but he doesn't like being praised for it.

My brother was in the AF and I've seen many people thank him while he was in uniform, but I've never asked him about it

Kind of what my friend echoed, but that it does make him uncomfortable

A little. I volunteered and my pay/benefits are pretty good and are funded by your tax dollars. Still, support of the populace is important to a quality all volunteer force and it's a two way street. Marines understand that image is important and not just for getting laid, although it doesn't hurt.

I typically just say "Proud to do it."

Not uncomfortable, but not really needed. I did not do it for anyone who says "thank you".

What does make me uncomfortable/pisses me off is when people mention anything about my service around Memorial day. That ticks me off because memorial day is about the guys who are not here because they are KIA.

You want to say thank you on veteran's day? Fine. Memorial day? Lay some flowers on a tomb.

For some of the older guys, have you noticed a lot more of this since 9/11? My buddy retired last year at 48 and said he never really noticed it before then

It's pretty uncomfortable when they do it to us ROTC guys, cause they don't know any better.

I never wear all the "I served" regalia or put bumper stickers all over everything and I've put on about 40lbs since I retired so unless they know me personally, people would never guess I was a retired Marine, unless service comes up in conversation.

The confusion around this astounds me. I think it hit a lot closer to home for older generations because the likelihood of knowing someone who died in battle was higher than it is now (thankfully)

I know right?

I went to army surplus and got a uniform that I wear to Subway and the like where I can get discounted or free meals for being in uniform. I hate it when someone thanks me for serving.

I'm always like, is it wrong that I impersonate a soldier to get free food?

But then that delicious meatball sub hits my lips, and all my worries fade away...
