Now that you fixed your post, I saw a blog post where a guy made a really cheap one out of irrigation tubing, a pool pump, and a garden hose.

What are you trying to heat?

I just talked to these black dudes last week in a run down house with solar power and water heaters. They said the system was supposed to cost $35k. The fed and state paid $30k, and one of those actors or whoever dumped a bunch of money into New Orleans specifically for green energy stuff. That paid the rest of the $5k, and they got the system for free. They weren't even looking to get it, but contractors came around and told them they'd do it for free.

Bills went from average $190/mo to $50/mo

I know there are companies that do free audits and shite, so you might call them and ask what's up with the whole setup and how much it would cost you.

thanks. I'll check into that bu ti'm pretty sure you have to come up front with the money and get some of it back in tax deductions

From the regular people I have talked to about it, now you just pay the difference that the gov doesn't cover and the solar company takes all of the rebates at that point. Only money out of your pocket is the cost difference, and they take care of the rest

There are a lot of bullshitters and crooks working in the solar industry right now because of the credits available. Just be aware of that and read any contracts very carefully before signing.

How are you trying to use it? If using it for a home, you have plumbing code issues to deal with. The old state plumbing code was being interpreted in a way that made it nearly impossible to get one approved, but that should be cleared up in the next 6 months as the state goes to one of the international codes.

If you're just looking for something to add on a camp, I'd love to see your design and give you some pointers. For best efficiency, you want something that can circulate a mass of water through the exchanger. You can get a decent amount of water pretty hot by letting it sit in a black hose, but you actually transfer more heat when the water temp is lower. Thus, circulation helps take in more heat.

In a lot of designed systems, they actually use some type of oil as a working fluid for the collector. The oil heats up at a lower rate, so the temperature difference (delta-T) stays high. However, your output temperature may be lower when you have less sun striking the collector. Just something to think about.

When I was walking around in the mountains like an idiot, we used to carry around a 3gal bag that was clear on one side and had a silver liner on the inside. It got relatively warm considering it was 70 outside.

If it is just for the camp, wouldn't a fricking baby pool with some foil in the bottom work? Top it off with saran wrap so bugs don't get it and attach a hose to the bottom with plumber's goop. Insulate the outside of the baby pool and you're set. That'll only cost like $30 and you could get 20 gallons of hot water from it

I just designed that in my head, so that makes me a genius, right?
