From BRBR

Why doesn't BR simply annex the area that wants to become St. George, and is there a bigger, sleazier weasel in local politics that John Delgado?

Why should they have to?

I don't know, but opponents sure are jumping through a lot of hoops to make sure StG doesn't happen. That part of the parish must be important for something. I'm sure LSURussian will soon chime in to give us the low-down.

I thought LSU owned the land near the casino that needed to be annexed for the casino to be annexed? Anybody have a map of the 630 acres the article is referencing?

The city can't annex any areas that would dilute minority voting power or else be subject to the wrath of the federal DOJ. It doesn't matter that the city/parish have a unified government. It is therefore in the city's best interest to incorporate as much unincorporated commercial land as possible into the city while avoiding as much residential land as possible. Remember, in annexation efforts, a majority of the property owners must vote to request annexation in order to be considered by the council. By bypassing residential property owners, those people don't get a say in what gets incorporated. The city government can annex sales tax producing properties and prevent them from ever being able to be used by a hypothetical St. George. It's vindictive, but effective if legal.

Some folks named Lambert own the land. I'm sure this is a quid pro quo kind of deal.

As I posted on the poli-board, the 630 acres is owned by Charles Lambert. He has tried for more than 10 years to get a casino permit, even sued.

Now, his land has become priceless to BR because it could be used to connect to lauberge. Suddenly, he desires for BR to annex his property. Dirty shite is going down.

Oh, and for tax purposes, his land is currently valued at $83 an acre. Riiiiight.

I'm ambivalent about the STG thing; I see pros and cons of the issue. I did sign the petition to put it on the ballot, though. I do know one thing for certain; I won't vote for John Delgado for mayor when he decides to run. He seems like a first-class douche bag and will have a hard time winning w/o the folks in the SE part of the parish.

Ah, our crooked little assessor's office strikes again.

+1, and I will help his opponent if it is someone who is a decent candidate.

That's why I stated "decent" candidate.

We need someone with a vision, and a burning desire to make EBR better. Someone who would serve with honor and not just because it's a rung on the ladder.

to answer your second question, no one comes to mind. He's useless as a councilman, too busy keeping his name in the paper and his face in front of a camera.

At work we have a special name for people like that - weaseldick.

I know you struggle with math, but $51,950 valuation for 630 acres comes out to $82.46 an acre.

why do you bother?

And you struggle with continued stupidity.

That's the 10% of market value assessment which is what non-commercial property is assessed at under Louisiana property tax law.

The property is valued at $519,500.

So, you're only off by 90% which is not bad for you.....

That property isn't adjacent to the casino. Why does BR want it annexed? I'd turn the guy down and ask the assessor why it's assessed so cheap.

So the market assessment is $83 an acre, got it. Just like I said.
