Is Verizon Edge a good deal?

Looking to move from Sprint to Verizon? Currently have unlimited with Sprint, but would like better coverage.
What is the catch...is 4 lines plus 10GB Shared for 160.00 the true out the door cost?

That is AT&T's deal. To get that deal you have to already own your phones. With Verizon or AT&T if you use their next/edge programs the cost of financing the phones brings you right back to regular prices.
However, with AT&T you can bring your own phone and get a discounted price. You can't do that with Verizon.
I am in the process now of acquiring phones for myself, my wife and daughter to switch from Verizon to AT&T. When it is done I should save about $80 a month

I dont think edge is as bad of a program as everyone thinks it is.. Verizon has offered me to deduct $20 from my monthly bill while I pay an additional $20 something for the phone of choice.. They are basically paying the monthly "note" for you by dropping your bill by $20...
Sure you have to have 50% paid off to upgrade but its not a bad deal for people who like to swith phones often.
I havent done it yet but may consider it in the future.

The bad part about edge is that you are essentially leasing a phone forever on the program. My understanding of it is that you pay full retail price over the course of 20 months but never keep the phone, you always have to trade it in and get into another monthly payment on the next phone.

Actually, you can now with Verizon as well. I did it.

From what I was told, you can basically quit paying the Edge fee at 20 months if you want to keep the phone.
Their goal is to keep you upgrading but the Verizon manager (who I know and trust) swears that you can discontinue paying Edge at 20 months. In fact, you can quit earlier but you have to pay the balance of the phone cost. For example, they take the purchase price of the phone and divide it by 20 to get the monthly Edge cost. If you quit early, you just have to pay the rest of the phone cost and keep the phone. It is really more of an installment plan than a leasing plan.
ETA: Note that EDGE is a bad deal unless ensure that the Verizon rep drops your monthly "per device" fee to $15 (for the user-provided phone) instead of the typical $40/month fee. Otherwise, it is a total rip-off -- and the rep WILL do this if you let them.

You get $10 off the $40 on an 8Gb plan or less, $25 off the $40 on a 10gb plan or higher.
Also, to the people saying you are stuck paying forever...you have several options.
1. Pay 60% of the phone price (12 payments), turn the phone back in, and then either EDGE again or sign a 2 year contract.
2. Make 20 payments, the EDGE payments stop but the $10/$25 discount continues and the phone is yours to keep.
EDGE makes all the sense in the world if you you need 10Gb of data (so families or heavy users). If you use less data, it's a judgement call. Pay a little more but get phones more frequently.
Math:
10gb of data $100
4 lines at normal price (4 x 40 = 160)
Total= 260
Plus paying $200 for each S5 up front
With edge:
10gb of data $100
4 lines x $15 = $60
4 s5 on edge ($30 x 4) = 120
Total: $280 but you didn't pay the 800 up front for the phones and you get new phones every 12 months.

If you are talking about the monthly payment for cell phones from Verizon then definitely a rip off. They charge you way much more then you'd pay even if you purchased the phone out right.
if the math in the post above yours is correct, then you are wrong
i don't have the need for 4 phones, but I may be going up to 3 around christmas, so I'll have to see how it works out for me when that time comes

here's a question someone may be able to answer...
lets say you've paid off 60% of the phones price at 12 months and want to upgrade....
could you pay the final 40% and keep the current phone to hand down or resell if you chose to?
i would think a 12 month old iphone would be worth more than 40% of 650 ($260) on the open market

The catch is - you pay full price for the phones, but they let you pay it out over time. You don't get a contract period and earlier upgrade times, but they're still going to get ~ $260 to $300 per month from you - OR $400 to $500 for the phone, up front.
Pay them now or pay them later.

My big problem with EDGE is that you never own the phone if you upgrade every 12 months - like renting a phone for $20/$25 a month...

Joe, do I own the phone at that point? Do I have to re-Edge to keep the discount? Those are questions I need answered by next Thursday (LG G3, ). We typically keep phones 30 to 36 months, so it can make sense - especially with never having to sign a new contract.

from my understanding, you own the phone once its paid in full at any point in the 20 months
i don't think you have to do anything to keep the discount, as long as you keep the 10GB data plan
you can also make a down payment when you start the plan to get the monthly cost down
like i posted earlier...at any point you can pay off the phone and keep it, and still upgrade at that time if you choose to resell the phone for what its worth
i'm really interested to try this out once the new iphone comes out
hopefully the 32.49/month doesnt change

Yes you own the phone, and the discount stays on. So your bill would be significantly cheaper from month 20+ until you decide to get a new phone.

Can I switch to edge now?
Before my contract is up, but without purchasing a new phone right now?

I asked them if I could get the discounted pricing on two lines that are about to be out of contract. They said no, I would have to purchase two edge phones to get the discounted (edge) plan

Makes sense, but it was worth asking
Hopefully I can do that in September with a new iPhone even though my contract goes to December
