...long time (10-15+ years)?

My mother died when I was eleven, and I have not seen or spoken to my father since I was sixteen. I am currently thirty-seven. For me, it has been awhile.

The purpose of this question:

I am writing a short story that centers around a man who grew up in a community of people who were abandoned or left home at an early age. They go through certain memory-altering processes...but some later return to their former memories..../spoilers...(lol)
I am looking for a little inspiration for a few characters. I thought I might find some interesting ideas here.

Who wants to help? Would you share your story? I am not looking to steal your history...just looking for inspiration. Go!

Edited to fix the date/age mix up. It's not the first time I have done that.

My parents were killed in a car accident 2 weeks after my first birthday. I have zero memory of them. I was raised my maternal grandmother from that time until she died a few months before my 15th birthday. After she passed I drifted from home to home until I graduated HS and joined the army.

Darth, thanks for sharing.

Cdawg, yes, you could call him a deadbeat...or lunatic...or scum. He shot and killed my mother on her 33rd birthday (March 29th, 1989). That was 1989. I have no idea where he is today.

Your parents have been dead for over 25 million years?

You're welcome. There's a whole story behind all that, especially my teen years drifting after she died. But it rustles the jimmies of some on the OT when I discuss it so I'll not rehash it here.

I did not say he wasn't. I said I do not know where he is: prison, Kansas, England, graveyard?

Oh OK

I figure you may have at least known if he was in prison over it or did some time for it at the very least.

I went to school with a girl whose mom just up and shot the dad one night. We were in Jr High when it happened. She is like you and hasn't spoke to her mom since but I do know the mom was sent away.

My father passed away 20 years ago. One day several years ago, my wife asked me a question that I had never thought about. She asked me if when I think of my dad, do I vision him the way he looked when he died, or do I see him as an older person like he had aged over the years. I had never thought about that, but I definitely only think of him the way he looked 20 years ago. I had never even thought about him aging if he was still alive.

My mother passed away 14 years ago from cancer and I just recently saw my dad at my grandmothers funeral for the first time in 8 years. I cut off my relationship with my dad when I got sober because he is an alcoholic with a pain pill addiction. Him and my stepmom are the most drama filled people I know and I stay away from shite like that these days.

Yea I understand

I didn't mean to be insensitive about it. I was just genuinely curious.

Sorry

That is actually something I consider. My mother was 33 when she died. She would be 58 today. I try to imagine her as a grandmother, but I cannot do it.
