On his hunting provision, Vitter said he was motivated by a 2009 decision from the Fish and Wildlife Service that denied Louisiana duck hunters access to fields where Hurricane Gustav destroyed crops, saying that the fields had been "baited."

quote:

"Since the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Congress has done nothing to prevent gun violence in our schools, in our homes, and on our streets," Murphy said. "That should be our number one focus."

What does Sandy Hook have to do with hunting on federal lands?

From the comments:

What a maroon!

And here we go.....

Regulate hunters because of sandy hook.

I hope Vitter rips them a new arse hole.

Eta: LA wildlife and fisheries already told Feds to EAD regarding fishing.

Eta2: Bring this to the outdoor board.

quote:

Connecticut's two senators, Democrats Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal, voted against allowing debate to move forward, saying it is wrong to pass legislation that effectively extends gun use on federal lands before Congress acts to protect against gun violence, such as the 2012 mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school that killed 20 first graders and six educators.

I'm confused as to why personally responsible independent conservatives would even the Nanny State to supply them land to hunt on.
Get a job - and buy your own land, or rent it from someone else.

Because your looking at it from a dark closet.
These are lands held by the people and admin by elected officials.

They are not private prop.

Sounds like a socialistic democracy to me.

The Founders would have been appalled.

So that means I can do whatever I want on them?

I think I'll build a house on federal land. Federal land - I built that!

I wish, just once, you could be as smart as Rex. I think it would be fascinating to debate some of your views. Instead, you seem too simple to make any coherent arguments. Patronizing baseless schtick is all you appear capable of. Oh well.

Right, excepting for the laws specifically forbidding it.

Rex is smarter than you think.

I don't mind bringing it down to Rex's level for you. But like I said - he's smarter than you give him credit.

You're reducing us to one dimensional measurements?

When comparing conservatives among one another, I consider far more than one factor. There's not only lack of intelligence - but ignorance, hypocrisy, greed, and denial.

EDIT - BTW, if it "ain't even close" you should put Rex >> Spidey. The >> sign means "much greater than"

Because hunters actually pay for the land through taxes on guns, ammunition, and licensing fees.

From the FWS website:

quote:

Proceeds from the Federal Duck Stamp, a required purchase for migratory waterfowl hunters, have purchased more than five million acres of habitat for the refuge system (2005 statistics only); lands that support waterfowl and many other wildlife species, and are usually open to hunting.

If you can't understand the English words printed in the link you yourself posted I cannot help you.

quote:

That doesn't convey personal ownership of the land. And if they don't think they get enough land to hunt on in return for the fees - they are free to not pay them and go to the private market. Its called "personal responsibility". Maybe you've heard of it.

BTW - the right wing doesn't think you should have to pay fees to use land the government manages, so it doesn't matter (see Cliven Bundy)

You really are confused.

Seems logical that citizens would want access to federal land. After all, it is owned by the people.

Seems logical that if they are independent and personally responsible they will take their hunting business to a private party when the federal lands aren't a good enough deal for them. Instead they whine.

Cliven Bundy's an idiot, and I'm fairly right-of-center. He should have paid the grazing fees like everybody else. However, his stunt did, again, expose Harry Reid as the dirty creep we all know him to be.
