Apparently, HBO execs finally read the book and realized there's not one character that you don't want to hit in the face with a shovel. I love Gaiman, but I don't get the love for this book.

Its a strange book that can be pretty hard to read at times. I like it.

The wonder of the book is in the prose. Not the characters. Similar thoughts toward McCarthy novels

i just read the first chapter. then came to check TD. found this. quite a coincidence. kinda cool.
anyway, that scene at the end of the first chapter was fricking weird as frick. not sure what to think or how much i'ma keep reading. i'll check the second chapter and see whatsup. does it stay that strange? or does it get worse?

Oh yea, now I remember.
The rest of the book isn't "as" weird as that, but remember, the gods and entities are true to their origins and their myths.

I finished it last night. Really good book, although short and somewhat depressing.

the only other book i've read of his is The Graveyard Book, which is, I believe, geared more towards young adults/adolescents. Still a damn solid book, though. I really enjoyed it.
I used it to write about the portrayal of evil in adolescent literature back in college. Completely irrelevant, but whatever. Figured I'd share.

The Graveyard Book is his rebelling of The Jungle Book. I've yet to read it. I've read Anerican Gods, Neverwhere, Good Omens, and Ocean at the End of the Lane. I still have Anansi Boys sitting on my shelf. Also his graphic novel series The Sandman and Death.
The Ocean at the End of the Lane is a dark tale told from the viewpoint of a 7 year old. It is a man remembering an event from his childhood.

I'm still stuck somewhere in the middle of this book. It's a great concept and I really wanted to like it, but this book is super boring

It's a quick read. Only 170ish pages.
If you like comics/graphic novels, I recommend Gaiman's The Books of Magic as well.

Neil Gaiman is far and away my favorite writer.
I randomly picked up Neverwhere off the shelf in a B&N back in high school and fell IN LOVE. It's still one of my favorite novels ever. I even have the BBC mini-series of it on DVD and it's cheesily awesome.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane is a beautiful novel. I can't recommend it enough.
But I'm severely biased.
The Graveyard Book is also an extremely fun, dark retelling of The Jungle Book.
