A rash of animal shootings by police officers nationwide has law-enforcement agencies running for cover amid growing public outrage that could force state legislatures to require greater accountability from men and women in uniform.

quote:

No government agency keeps a national database on the number of pets killed by police. But animal-abuse activists have kept statistics, and they say a pet is killed by law enforcement every 98 minutes in America. They say it is largely a result of officers having little-to-no training on how to deal with dogs.
And if they will shoot a person’s pet without hesitating, that should make people concerned for their own safety, Rosenthal said.

“It’s a travesty that’s going on all over the country, and the more it happens the more our police feel emboldened to pull their guns and shoot first,” Rosenthal said.

“Is that supposed to make us feel safe? Government and police have gotten to the point where they cease to serve the citizens and believe everyone is here for their convenience. Between the civil-asset forfeiture laws, which have now become big business for police departments, and the civil rights violations in just so many different areas, it’s become really a problem. We are developing an American Gestapo.”

I refuse to believe that it's because of a lack of training. It seems as though for such a large number of officers to have such a standardized response, that they must be being TRAINED to respond to dogs with deadly force. There is simply no other logical explanation for a dog to be shot by police every 98 minutes.

For shits and giggles, I took the LSP entrance exam about 10yrs ago... I shite you not, one of the questions on the exam was about responding to a dog and how you should handle it.

If they aren't trained well enough to handle a dog then how can we expect them to handle a human being properly?

Exactly... Read some of the comments in the article, they are golden.

Some are very true, especially that mail workers come into contact with dogs way more than police and there aren't any issues. How sad is it that postal workers are more equipped to deal with them than police

From the article:
"From the agency’s perspective, Willy Pete was given a chance to back off but “growled and bared his teeth” at the officers. That’s when Sgt. S.T. Harper, a 14-year veteran of the force, shot him"

That is the kind of mentality that you are dealing with in the police force, they believe an animal should have had deductive reasoning and realized they were cops, even animals must respect the authoritah!

Well in reality, the dogs are on the same mental level as most cops

A cop woke me up at 5:30 Saturday morning because he found a dog that had been run over in the street in front of my house. He thought it must have been mine and the dog was still alive. He asked a few of the other neighbors but was unable to locate the owner. I can honestly say he tried everything he could to save the dog.

So, he took it to the vet hospital nearby?

Or did he just walk to every door to find the owner?

I doubt there is a vet hospital open at 530 in the morning on a Saturday in Zachary

He did seem very concerned about the dog.

That's my anecdotal story to add to this thread. Normally I bash cops all the time. I think people get way to bent out of shape over the dog killing. There are plenty of other reasons to hate cops.

I completely agree. There are a multitude of reasons to hate police tactics. Shooting dogs just adds fuel to the already lit fire.

This. Shooting peoples' dogs is just a senseless, unnecessary, "dick move" to the populace that they are charged to "protect and serve".

I think killing someones animal, in their own yard, without fear or mechanism for reprisal from the owner is a pretty high ranking reason.

We had a incident in P'cola a couple of months ago.when cops looking for a suspect at night saw a box under a open window so of course they entered the home with no warning. House was dark dogs surprised as were cops and firing begins from cops killing two of the dogs.
Wrong house. Cops said nothing and that is what has happened since.
This is happening way to much.

It is definitely a reason worthy of anger. I consider their impact on the human aspect of society to be much more infuriating though.

They do it because they know they will not be punished by it, however the ones that get out'd on Facebook tend to get fired. I really do think some cops are so hard up for action that they decided , hey want to shoot something huh well shoot a dog it wont get you tossed in jail.
I also feel that one day one of these cops is going to miss and hit and kill a bystander, oh wait that happens all the time anyway. One of my friends is a state police range officer, it is amazing: 1 how he talks about how shitty of a shot some of the officers are, and 2 he has to being a ton of ammo to the range on qualifier so some pass.
Until someone sues an officer in civil court for damages this will keep happening.

Won't happen... The scum is protected by the tax payer and their union.

I wish a state legislature would allow for officers to be personally held responsible for their actions. You bet your arse instances would drop considerably.

I don't understand why they don't just carry a little can of pepper spray in their pocket. They make it the size of magic marker.

Rank and file cops? Yes.

SWAT teams in some states like Massachusetts? Probably not so much, as they are now listed as a non-profit group to protect their finances and records.

I don't think those particular assholes thought that one out too clearly given that it likely blows away their immunity as agents of the city / state.
