so, i'm starting my own business (independent contractor) and need to set up an solo 401k. I was looking for a financial planner in Natchez, MS and the one I've found works with (for?) ameriprise financial.

Is this a good institution?

Can I buy vanguard mutual funds for my 401k through ameriprise?

Is he just gonna push ameriprise stuff to me?

TIA

Why not set it up through Vanguard if you intend to buy their funds?

Setting up our sep ira's (5 people) through them was really easy. Their concierge service is very helpful answering questions about all of it.

I use one but he is also my pledge brother from my fraternity. I'm sure he handles me differently. Never pushes anything on me.

I can put the most pre tax money into it I think. That's why I'm seeking the help if a financial planner and not just doing this myself through vanguard.

I recommend opening a SEP-IRA with Vanguard. Easy, cost effective, investment advice available if/when you need it. Wife and I set ours up over 5 years ago. Maximum contribution for 2014 is $52,000 (or 25% of your salary whichever is lower).
