Pops had a little alumaweld boat with a 25 tohatsu. He sunk it last year in the salt water just south of the salt water barrier.

We cleaned it up and sat since last October 'til yesterday. I put my mechanic on it this morning. He replaced both batteries, rewired some corroded stuff, replaced the fuel filter, new gas mix with some added seafoam. Motor cranked right up.

Took it out this evening for a test run and to "blow it out" and it won't get up. It idles and runs perfect but just won't hit that next gear and get on top.

What would be your next move?

Get a new motor.

But I have a low level of patience for dealing with broken outboards.

I'm no outboard expert, but I've heard the timer base can cause problems like this. Also the high speed jets.

Yeah, not a boat mechanic. I hired for skills as an alignment specialist and light mechanic work. Diagnoses without a plug to hook the scan tool to, he's lost.

agreed...used to happen to mine every year, even if I ran all of the fuel out after using every time...

I could actually take it out and clean without disassembling the carb...

I think it's worse when you do run it out. For sure it's harder to get the shite out if it's dried up

I've always been told never to run the fuel out.

If I am not going to use the boat for at least two weeks I run the fuel out. Is this good or bad?

Myself, if it is not fuel injection, run it out if you are not going to use it with in two weeks. It is not going to do any harm running it out. Some people think that the orings will harden up inside. But it is going to happen anyway due to gas evaporating.

OP, it could be the high speed jet, but there is a good chance that it can be the stator or a power pack too. Do the jet first. If that doesn't cure it, then pull the flywheel to check the stator.

I would start at the fuel tank and make sure its vented. Then check the fuel connection and lines. Then the primer bulb and fuel filter. Then check fuel pump and then the carb.

25 tohatsu

Should have NGK spark plugs. Remove plugs and place in Mercury/Yamaha 25HP, this should resolve your issue.....The spark plugs are the only parts worth a damn on a Tohatsu

Or you could clean the carb....
