Want some sort of safety device for my boat, considering an EPIRB device or a spot tracker.

EPIRB like this one LINK
$260 with no monthly fees, has strobe and homing frequency so if SHTF responders can come strait to you. Only downside is only useable when life threatening circumstance. Cant use for mechanical breakdown, stuck boat, etc.

Spot trackers are approximately $100, then your looking at a $9.99/month service fee. Pros is you have a SOS to alert all authorities with your lat long as well as a help button if your broke down can notify family members your location to send help. Can also check in to give family members a piece of mind.

Do any fellow OB'ers have either sort of safety device and offer any Pro's/Cons to either?

I am not familiar with the spot tracker...sounds like you have all the same functionality by calling with a cell phone...

True, however I fish near rigs offshore quite often where cell phone signal is iffy which is why I'm leaning more towards EPIRB as will be a backup to cell phone in event I dont have a signal.

Check on coverage with SPOT, I haven't been convinced that Spot=EPIRB. I have an EPRIB on my boat after doing the research on them about 2 years ago. That research many not be accurate today.

I think I would go this route...I like the idea that you can mount them on the boat so that they will activate automatically in case of sinking, etc. where you just don't have time to activate anything yourself...

I use a spot tracker often when kayaking. Have posted several threads on here with tracking feature so OB could follow along real time.

It's very convenient, waterproof and works well.

You can also use the preprogrammed message buttons to check in with friends/ family and let them know you locations and that you're ok.

Only real issue was when climbing mt rainier, the mountain interfered with satellite triangulation and it didn't work well.

Looks like spot would cost you more over time with subscription costs.

It is satellite based so broad coverage while out in open which would be the case in your boat.

You do have to be able to push the button to call for help. If you have tracking feature anyone can check on your location at anytime if you give them web link.

Spot is great smaller too but if my life depended on it I would have both just a few hundred bucks

This.

Buy a EPIRB and you may need to change the battery every few years, but with SPOT you have to purchase a subscription ($100/yr is the cheapest plan, I think), so the SPOT will end up costing you more in the long run.

have a boat captain buddy that uses a spot tracker to make check ins on facebook when he is making runs between bahamas>bermuda>florida> mexico.

seems like the coverage works pretty well in those areas which are likely more remote than anywhere you will be going.

Check out Delorme InReach. GPS tracking and send texts to let everyone know where you are on overnighters.
