I received a Nexus 7 tablet from someone who got the 2nd generation version of it.

I'm finishing updating the firmware to KitKat 4.4.3 right now. Can anyone point me to some good custom ROMS and maybe a URL for rooting this thing?

I really am enjoying it coming from nothing but iOS phones/tablets since their inception. My iPad 3rd gen retina took a dive off the counter and the glass screen has some nice cracks in it so I was looking at the smaller form factor tablets to replace it like the iPad mini and Galaxy Tab 3 and the Nexus.

Buddy gave me this first gen Nexus 7 and I am loving it. It's probably going to push me to get the 2nd gen version to enjoy the resolution/ram/processor boost rather than sticking with an iPad.

Just need to find out what this rooting is all about and wanted to ask you guys about the best custom ROMS for the n7 and where to start.

After googling around I found there is so much info out there I was just wondering if anyone here has one.

I personally don't use toolkits for rooting/flashing etc. but if you just want to get it done use this toolkit.

It make it very simple and lays everything out for you.

Toolkit

Just root it and install a custom recovery (probably TWRP) then you can choose a ROM based on your liking from here ROMS. Just click through some of the ROMS listed to find one that fits your needs.

I'd just root it and put a custom kernel and call it a day. If you want to heavily customize you can use a CM based ROM or download Themer from the market and stay on Stock.
