Will Star Trek ever be the same?

I went back and watched Enterprise recently, I did not watch it during its original run. The concept was intriguing, there are so many things they could have done with it. The cast wasn't terrible, I liked Scott Bakula as the captain.

I understand the ratings were shite, so they moved towards this more action driven series. And It got me wondering.

I loved TNG. I think its a fantastic show with just the right mix of action and drama without venturing too far from its premise: Exploration. Hell, I even enjoy The Motion Picture. I'll watch it anytime its on.

Enterprise started out much the same, but the ratings were shite, so they drove up the action. The new reboot movies have been action packed, and I wonder how/if they are going to address the exploration issue in the five year mission in the third one. So, with the short attention span of modern viewers, could a show like Star Trek or TNG even survive today?

I like the new movies. Sure, it's not the same great, cheesy, science fiction, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The old formula of go to a planet, discover a weird species with a problem, Kirk seduces a beautiful member of that species, a red shirt dies, and they fix the problem is now a cliche. It's been done to death. The more action-based versions of the Star Trek universe are a lot of fun, and hold up much better.

Sure, it's fun and nostalgic to watch Kirk over-act and seduce green women, but it's also fun to watch new-Kirk make an arse of himself and shoot people.

You can have both. I agree that TNG was a near perfect balance of the two.

First off, I enjoyed the new movies. But they're not really Star Trek in anything but name and characters.

And I get the TOS formula is now a cliche. I've read Red Shirts, and I like Galaxy Quest. TOS was campy in the way all sixties shows were.

But I disagree with your assertion that the action based versions hold up better. Its easy to write action episodes. Its not as easy to write science episodes and make them interesting.

Maybe so, but I recall an interview where Patrick Stewart said he was, initially, going to skip it because he understood they were making fun of Star Trek. Frakes called him and said, "You must not miss this film." Stewart said he watched in a packed cinema, with howls of laughter, the loudest coming from him. His favorite part, in particular, was that the day was saved by fans who understood the actual science upon which the show was based.

Real Star Trek (pre-2009) will always be on top because of things like this.

The Original Series was first, foremost and always about action and adventure. It is something that is lost on the more whiney members of it's fans. Sure they tackled issues of the day but kirk would always lose his shirt kicking someone's arse. McCoy would always save the day in his lab and spock would become human in a moment to save the day.

Star Trek at it's finest was never about complicated relations or talking a problem to death.

Have phaser will travel.

The new movies are a perfect blend of what the original series was about.

There's a lot of room for more drama and less action, but it needs to be more serialized. People don't want to binge watch a bunch of unrelated episodes, they want to be rewarded for their commitment. DS9 for instance might actually play out better than TNG in today's environment.

Galactica seemed pretty successful. Closer to DS9 than the original Trek in tone, with all of the conspiracy and spy stuff.

TNG had plenty of action and adventure, and they arguably did it better than TOS. Some of the better episodes had nothing to do with fighting the aliens of the week. The one where they were stuck in the time loop, all the Holodeck episodes, Q, etc. The Borg were an awesome villain, because they couldn't defeat them with brute strength, at least at first.

I guess it focused more on the adventure side, which I enjoyed. For that matter, my favorite of TOS movies is VI, and I'd say that by far that was the most adventurous of the movies.
