So we saw Apple talk of opening up iOS a bit recently, and here's another nod...

I've been watching one of my favorite musicians on Twitter (I admit he's an EDM artist named Brian Transeau; otherwise known as BT). He's extremely talented. Classically trained pianist and is an alumni of the Berklee School of Music in New England.

He's also an uber computer nerd and has been a huge fan of Apple. He used to have his own dedicated page on Apple and helped them out with development and testing of their music production software in the past.

Lately, he's complained long and loud that Apple has completely dumbed down the tools available after previously working very hard to make world class software for professionals like him to do their work with.

I also saw a year or so ago that a lot of movie makers were up in arms over some rollback of functionality in Final Cut, which is an Apple program many filmmakers used to produce their work.

At first I was concerned that Apple was trying to appeal to more folks and leave power users alone. I see that personally as the wrong move. But now I see where APPL is opening up their keyboards and I'm thinking they're making a move towards a more open system. At least on a certain level.

Then I see where they're also ceasing support for Aperture and no longer innovating their photography editing program. When I add all this up, Apple's appearing to make a huge pivot towards letting others take care of the niche programs for artists, etc. The same way MSFT has been doing with few exceptions for years and years. Whether they plan on differentiating based on hardware and the background OS software I don't know.

I'm sure lots of folks arrived at this opinion or theory long before I did...but what is Apple going to focus on now? Siri? Maps? Other devices as yet still veiled by their famous secrecy? Anyone care to guess?

The numbers don't lie.. Many people including myself have bailed to their competitors due to the closed nature.

The two biggest things that I like better about my s4 that made me switch from Apple are the screen size and the SwiftKey keyboard. If apple gets a bigger screen and allows you to change your keyboard, I will definitely go back.

Bingo. Their arrogance and stubborness to open source and keep up with the Joneses will be their slow death. Great hardware with fit/finish but until they get a clue with OS, they will continue to lose to the more "educated" end user.

What numbers would that be?

I just recently jumped ship after 5 years of having an iPhone to a note 3. I'm extremely pissed off.

I should have done this a long time ago. The OS is a bit sluggish but not enough to really hinder anything. The SwiftKey keyboard is effing awesome. The bigger screen is great. It's not a big deal carrying the phone like most people worry about. The customization is truly spectacular.

You need to root that sucker and get off that TouchWiz.
