So, the kids decided they wanted to watch a movie last night and after numerous rejections by one, or the other (or vetoes from Mom or Dad), we pulled this one from the DVDs to watch. It had been years since I had watched it, and I have a few takeways:

1) It is a very worthy remake of the original, with a lot of nods to the 1961 version (including one particular actress' appearance). Funny, and heartwarming.

2) It makes one realize what a waste of talent Lindsey Lohan has become. This was her big breakout and she did a great job. Her subsequent work was also pretty good and but for going completely off the rails (which is what happened) she seemed poised for a nice career. Damned shame.

3) Natasha Richardson...tragic.

Agree with all of this. My daughter will watch both the original and this one quite often. Although I'm more a fan of the original, I do enjoy the remake.

I was a kid myself when the 1998 version came out. I still watch it whenever it comes on TV .

Natasha was gorgeous in it.

This movie had me thinking Lindsay Lohan was a twin for years because I was a little retard.

They did a very good job of it. Tried to avoid the "split screen" effect from the first one. Technology...

These movies always bothered me. How can you just give up a child and split twins? That just doesn't seem legal and is a horrible thing to do to the children. Then, they finally meet their child (that they voluntarily gave up) and it's back to normal an hour later. It's just weird..

I agree that the idea of splitting their twins up is horrible...why couldn't both parents live within 30 minutes of each other so they could have joint custody? I know that whenever I become a mom and if my husband and I split up, there is NO WAY that I'd let him take one child, and me the other child, without either sibling getting to see each other and their other parent.

The main reason they split up was because of their careers being in different places. I agree that aplitting the kids was really really dumb.

Yeah, they just decided to never see their children again. It's just horrible and they are pretty terrible people..

It's pretty apparent that they are both super wealthy and split up cause they married too young or something. They just did it for selfish reasons and supposedly cause it was easier not to see each other..

Yeah, definitely for selfish reasons...and even though he owned a winery/vineyard and she was a fashion photographer...couldn't she have done the same thing she did in London in California??

She was a designer, but could still have done it from CA.

Yes, if you dig deep into the underlying plot, they are both horrible people for what they did to these girls.

I am shocked there has not been an "R" rated take on this movie where the girls end up stripping in the same club and then proceed to hatch a plan where they torture and kill the parents.

So basically what Lindsay Lohan does now?? I can't believe that she hasn't ODed yet...and her parents are shitty human beings.

This.

As I noted in the OP...it's a damned shame. Maybe this was in her DNA (see Miley Cyrus), but I have to thing it was more the family environment that was the primary driver of her current state.

Some of it is definitely her fricked up parents, but it's also fame at a young age. It's not good for you. George Clooney has talked about how he's thankful he wasn't famous until 30 because his observations and personal experiences of Hollywood-type fame have shown him that child and teen stars are extremely messed up adults more often than not. His theory is that rather than developing an authentic, grounded sense of self, child and teen stars have that process short circuited and perverted by being lauded with interest and feted with adoration.

I don't think its fair to compare Miley to Lohan.

Yes, she has shed her Disney image by going for shock value Madonna style but she isn't getting busted multiple times doing/probably being addicted to hard drugs or causing accidents while drinking and driving.
