Marci was watching television in her fourth-floor walk-up on West Twenty-first Street on the day the water reached the base of the streetlights. She stood up from her couch and let her carton of chocolate coconut Bliss fall to the floor. “Holy shite,” she said. “Don and Peggy do hook up. I knew it. I mean, I didn’t know it. But, on some level, I knew it.”

Her phone rang. It was her friend Kelly, in Los Angeles. “Hey, what’s up?” Kelly said.

“Oh, the whole polar-ice-cap thing is suddenly like, this crazy reality,” she said. “But, whatever, hashtag: outofmyhands. Did you watch? I thought the Don-and-Peggy thing was really interesting and smart.”

“Yeah,” Kelly said. “It totally foreshadowed how upper-middle-class American marriages ended up being about a shared intellect as much as about children, or sex.”

“Wow,” Marci said. “That is so smart.”

“Yeah, and that scene where they’re watching ‘Roustabout’ plays with our expectations of nostalgia in a really interesting way,” Kelly said. “shite. The persimmon tree behind my apartment just spontaneously burst into flames. I think I have to rescue the dog.” ...
