Well, thankfully, next week I'll be going from the hell known as McAllen TX to the apparent mediocrity that is known as Midland TX.

The only real things I know about Midland/Odessa come from Friday Night Lights and Heroes. The only thing I know there is to do there is watch high school football. But there also seems to be a lot of people moving there for oil money, and I've heard the town is pretty young.

So people familiar with the area, any recs? Places to hang out, places to eat, things to do, what the people at large are like, etc. Thanks for any help yall can provide.

A friend quit a serious job when they wanted him to relocate to Midland, think about it.

Midland is better than Odessa. That is about all I have to say about that.

I split my time between Midland and Houston, I'm here right now. It's a hell of a lot better than McAllen, but it's definitely not that exciting. Wall Street Bar and Grill and Garlic Press are both very nice local restaurants, The Bar on Missouri Ave is a pretty fun spot at night. Basin Burger House also has a cool patio. I honestly don't go out a ton here though, but I know it is there. Lots of golf too.

There are a lot of young people but unfortunately there isn't a centralized living/bar area where they all are. If there were I actually think it would be a lot of fun. There is quite a bit of money here too- I've seen several R8s, GT-Rs, Lambos, etc. it's odd to see in a place like this. There's also a definite small old money contingent that seems to be extremely influential. I'm sure people will trash on it ITT but it really isn't that bad.

Midland's pretty brutal. My dad's family is there and Odessa. I avoid going to see them at all costs. Try San Angelo or Abilene next time. Both good mid sized towns.

I know you're more likely to not get killed there than McAllen, but also less likely to come in contact with an attractive female.

Yeah the housing is really expensive

If you have to pay for your own housing and don't anticipate making 90k+ I would find a different job somewhere else
