More than 2,000 US officials have been investigated this year for ties to organized crime, particularly on the Mexican and Canadian borders, reports El Universal -- a figure which points to widespread corruption.

quote:

The officials include police officers and border patrol agents, according to Department of Homeland Security sources quoted by Mexican newspaper El Universal. Accusations against agents include protecting and escorting drug shipments, spying, and identifying informants, as well as trafficking drugs on behalf of Mexican criminal groups.

quote:

A report commissioned by US congressmen found that the internal affairs division of US Customs and Border Protection did not have mechanisms in place to obtain and analyze information on agents such as criminal records and polygraph tests. The internal affairs division is also under investigation for allegedly covering up employee misconduct, according to McClatchy.

So yet another Agency with serious problems? Color me shocked.

Not too much of a surprise, IMO. We generally think of the Mexican criminal groups as carrying on a war against the Mexican police, but I'm sure they devote more resources to paying them off. Would make sense for them to do the same thing here.

Seriously dude what does that have to do with this issue? Corrupt border patrol agents didn't just spring up in the last decade. You'd have to be naive to think this wouldn't happen. Lots of $$ in the drug business that is used to bribe many folks on local, state, and federal level.

Sarcasm, can you detect it?

Seriously, though, it's not really a surprise that they're dirty. It's more a surprise that it's being revealed right now.

I have a feeling that this is in retaliation for the national Border Patrol agent group helping shite-can the transfer of illegals from Texas to San Diego.

The SD area BP denied that it was going to happen and demanded that the journalist remove the story in question until the national BP group told them it really was happening and supported the journalist.

Countries that have huge monetary "traiding" gains lobby our politicians...wether it's a legitimate Chinese lobbyist trying to get their chicken into US stores or it's a cartel backed donater/purchaser of 10,000 Clinton books...their money influences DC.

Makes you wonder. The most evil administration ever also seems to be conducting( or unwittingly exposing by their ineptitude, depending on what color shades you have on), just about every arm of federal government in their wake.

Obviously not.
We do need a sarcasm emoticon for this board.

My dad used to live in Douglas, Az back in the early 80s working at my grandfathers blood plasma donation center there.

He tells me stories of how it was. He said every border patrol, police officer, the mayor, and damn near every town citizen was involved in the drug trade in one form or another. That's where the money was and it was corrupt to the core.

The border towns have been this way for a long time..it should come as a shock to nobody. It's hard as a border patrol agent making maybe 40k a year to turn down 50k in cash to just look the other way at a certain time of night. Hell I wouldn't turn it down

Agreed. Long hours and "underpaid" (which is a relative terms for what they actually do) so it's easy to see how they would be influenced with cash.

But 2k people under the microscope?......not good
