Brits always butcher the English language.

It's just a difference between the two dialects

When they say "The US are advancing", they are meaning it as "They are advancing." Which would be correct. That's just not how we say it in America.

I have only really heard them saying the ARE when we would say IS when they refer to the teams.
People in the US do it all the time as well when referring to teams. You just notice it more because it's in a different accent.
It all depends on how you mean it.
Miami is going to the finals. (Miami as a team is going to the finals).
Miami are going to the finals. (Miami as players are going to the finals).
ETA: Yes, what lsuhat said.

It really has to do with how they use singular names as plurals.. right?
Miami (the team) is going to the finals.
The Heat (the players) are going to the finals.
Germany (the team) is going to the finals.
Germany (the players) are going to the finals.
We just have mascots to differentiate here in the states, where most Euro based teams dont.
Thats how ive always made it make sense.

what bothers me more is when they put "that" or "this" on the end of a sentence.
nasty tackle, that.
exciting match, this.

We (Americans) have more traditional English accents than the current accent heard in England.

wut our accent/words differ just as much as theirs do by region.
Its just funny bc this place is so small yet you might not understand someone from only an hour away in another major city.
