college soccer at this stage is awful for the development of american talent.

It at one point did serve a purpose.

Looks like he's played some for the U.S. U-17 squad. It's pretty tough to follow college soccer if you're not living in the Northeast where the majority of the good teams are.

I agree with this 100%. But people should probably stop bringing it up in EVERY thread that mentions college soccer.

I grew up watching it

Those Bruce Arena UVA teams or watching UNC and UMD dominate

shite Geoff Cameron went to WVU when I was in school there. He would flat out dominate.

I went to games all the time in college and loved it. Still watch it online sometimes. But yea, the time where we should be taking college players onto the senior national team are coming to an end. I think Besler/Cameron/Guzan etc are the last of that generation.

But when some people say college soccer "serves no purpose", that's just not true. It allows kids to keep playing soccer competitively and maybe get a little bit of school paid for. Nothing wrong with that.

Do you actually think that our academy system, which is in its infancy, can actually scour a country the size of ours and cover all the available talent?

No, it can't. College soccer still serves a purpose.

College soccer for the most part does not develop talent the way we need it on the world stage. These guys need to go abroad or sign with the MLS instead of college. Of course there will be diamonds in the rough but the way MLS academies are coming along and how balls deep euro teams are scouting our talent the majority of these guys will and should never see the college ranks.

I agree with all of the above, but there will always be those who slip through the cracks. Even if the college system is the gutter of soccer development in this country, it makes sure that more players get filtered. Tons of guys on our squad came up through the NCAA (both of our centerbacks, for example), and I'm ok with that. Our reliance on college players will get smaller and smaller as our academy system gets better. But even DeAndre Yedlin played a year at Akron, and I'm ok with that. He's doing just fine right now, I would say.
