RICHTON, Miss. (WALA) – Two paramedics were killed in Greene County, Miss. in a tragic accident while responding to a medical call Tuesday, June 24, around 11 a.m, according to Mississippi Highway Patrol officials.
Mississippi EMA authorities said an accident left two paramedics dead.Mississippi EMA authorities said an accident on Highway 63 in Richton left two paramedics dead Tuesday afternoon, June 24.

The accident happened on Highway 63 in the Sand Hill community, near the intersection of Piave Plaza Road.

Officials with the Mississippi Highway Patrol tell FOX10 the crew was on their way to aid in a medical call when an 18-wheeler hauling a bulldozer took a left turn in front of the ambulance. The ambulance then collided with the 18-wheeler, and highway officials say both vehicles burst into flames. Officials say both paramedics died on impact.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was taken to a local hospital and is being treated for minor injuries. Officials say that man is 47-year-old Charles E. Bexley of Beaumont, MS. Bexley was taken to Perry County General Hospital, according to Mississippi Highway Patrol officials.

Brent Barfield with the Mississippi Highway Patrol told FOX10 the ambulance did have the right of way because the paramedics were responding to a medical call.

“Anytime something like this happens, it doesn’t matter what it is, they get in that ambulance, and if it were me, I call the ambulance, and I want them there as quick as they can,” said Brent Barfield, Trooper 1st Class, with Mississippi Highway Patrol.

He said he knew the victims personally, and the paramedics should always be remembered for their service to Greene County.

“Them guys, they’re out there, men and women alike, are out there every day, they put this uniform on, they ride that ambulance, everyday to help others, to help the public, so you know, those guys don’t need to be forgotten, because this is what they do, they’re here for us,” said Barfield.

The names of the paramedics killed in this tragic crash have not yet been released.

The crash remains under investigation.

Terrible news.

What is sad is that one of the guys killed has a son away on summer mission trips in a very remote region of the world. They cannot get in contact with him.

Thats horrible..

Stories like this are what scare me about being in the back of an ambulance unrestrained going priority 1.. you never know what will pull out in front of you, or what your partner is really paying attention to..

Many years ago an ambulance ran out in front of a train just south of Monroe. The two attendants survived but the patient they were transporting died from the accident.

This shite right here, all day long. Sometimes, even with a stable patient when I've taken a seat at their head and I'm buckled in, I start looking around at all the stuff in the back that is gonna serve as projectiles in the event of an accident and realize that my seatbelt is pretty much useless.

Terrible story

going priority 1.

can you explain what this means exactly? Almost every ambulance that I see with lights on is going slower than the posted speed limit or flow of traffic
