Games like team handball (or something similar played with a rugby ball) are not uncommon as a lighter training exercise. So yes, this probably is normal. No, it's not a sign. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Yeah I've trained this way. Focus on movement away from the ball, getting open, and communication. Definitely meant as a lighter training exercise as you said.

Playing handball is a very common practice for soccer teams. I used to do it with the middle school team I coached.

The U.S. played some soccer tennis today so it just means teams are taking it easy before a big game.

Great way to keep the players moving in similar ways that you have to for soccer while keeping things light. It also takes away the risk of a challenge coming in a little stronger than intended. All in all, it's just a good exercise which lets the players relax a bit.
