I'm faced with the decision of undertaking a six month lease at a less than stellar establishment or signing a year lease at a more reputable establishment and I'm not sure which I should pick.

I will probably be moving a month or two before December but my girlfriend(very serious relationship) will be living in the apartment until December so a very safe place is a must. Currently I'm only paying a fraction of my total bills but will be taking full responsibility of them around November; recent college grad. Come November my salary will be higher than it is currently, but the exact numbers are unknown(included for more information on the situation).

My question is should I go for the more expensive 6 month lease, $300 more a month, and have the piece of mind that I will not be stuck in a lease where no one is living but forgoe saving up any money for a couple of months? My other option is to take up a year lease which will be $300/month-$500/month cheaper, will allow me more flexibility in terms of spending and saving, but I will be forced to find a sublet in December. This will be in Baton Rouge fwiw. Any insite would be greatly appreciated.

Where are you living right now? could you live there for four or five more months?

Why are you moving in October - November and your gf in December? Are you leaving the BR area?

Personally, I would not want to sign a lease for a term that is significantly longer than I know I will be around. Too many issues there.

Have you gone to the complex that is offering the year lease, explained your situation, and tried to get a shorter term there? You said the year lease is 300-500/month cheaper, AND it's a safer location. Go talk to the leasing manager, and if needed, offer them a higher rent for a shorter term lease. It's worth a shot.

Currently living in a pretty crap place, only place that would accept me at the time without a cosigner(parents wouldn't help me).

I'm moving for my job to another state, she's in her last semester at LSU, so she can not move until she graduates online classes aren't available.

I'll try to talk to them but everyone seems to want to help but then hits me with the corporate office has their hands tied talk.

Is it so crappy that you just can't hold out until the end of the year?

Corporate hands are generally tied when there is a waiting list. Find a place with some immediate occupancy and waive higher rent in their face. You might find one that bites.

I could wait it out until the end of the year but as I said before I'll be gone and she will be here by herself for possibly 2+ months.

I may have found a nice affordable 6 month lease though, I'll know for sure tomorrow.

$300 less per month?

How much is the lease? In other words, at the cheaper rate, how many additional months are you REALLY paying for? The place doesn't have any early termination payment type opt-out?
