IDK if the story has been posted yet but I just spoke to a buddy of mine who was helping with the search.

Deputy Bares was off duty when he witnessed suspicious activity (from LEO's I talked to, he witnessed them robbing a house OR after the robbery.) When he confronted them he went to take their weapon and was shot.

They caught one guy earlier tonight (I dont have many details on how/when/where) But "he sang like a bird" and the other suspects was arrested in Kaplan!

Keep the family of Deputy Bares in your prayers. I am good friends with his daughter!

Here's the latest from Vermilion Parish Sheriff Mike Couvillion:

According to Vermilion Parish Sheriff Mike Couvillon an off duty Vermilion Parish Patrol Deputy lost his life as a result of a fatal shooting which took place off of South hospital Drive just south of Abbeville earlier today.

Sheriff Couvillon says that at approximately 4:04pm this afternoon, an off duty Patrol Deputy, (who is not being identified at this time pending notification of next of kin) was mowing grass on his day off on S. Hospital Drive just south of Abbeville when he called the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office to report two suspicious subjects in the area.

According to Sheriff Couvillon, a deputy was dispatched to the area of South Hospital Drive and upon arrival found the off duty deputy shot. A witness in the area observed a gold Lexus that had crashed into the ditch near the scene and saw 2 black male subjects fleeing the area in the off duty deputy’s pickup truck with a utility trailer and lawn mower. The deputy’s truck was found abandoned in the city of Abbeville off of Miles street.

The Sheriff also s stated that the State Police has been called in to conduct the investigation and Sheriff Couvillon says that the outpouring support from surrounding agencies has been overwhelming. A multi parish effort has been launched in the search for these suspects. We ask that the community be on the lookout and report any suspicious activity in their neighborhoods, specifically male subjects on foot . Furthermore we ask that residents take precautions locking up their property, homes and sheds and NOT to attempt to confront these suspects as they are considered ARMED AND DANGEROUS.

“It’s a very sad day today, as we lost a veteran brother in law enforcement, a husband, a father and a child. We are utilizing every available resource and will NOT rest until these dangerous criminals are apprehended and brought to justice”, says Sheriff Couvillon.

While I feel for the deputy involved and his family, being off duty and attempting to apprehend armed individuals is incredibly foolish. He should have just reported what he saw and called it a day.
