I'm trying to create a word document in Word 2010 that, when opened, has a dialog box that asks for business name, address, and some other things. The rest of the letter will be unchanged except for the fields it asks.

I tried googling it, but I'm obviously not using the correct jargon to get to what I want.

There's a few ways to do it, both involving Macros.

You could use an InputBox to ask user for each string, and use that to update a Field/Bookmark.

Or you could use an Input Form and have them enter all the information at one time in a form and have that update the fields/bookmarks.

Appreciate you posting this. I set up a number of these documents back in 2000 / 2001, and it worked slick as hell. I tried to recreate those documents (or similar) a few weeks ago, and I was absolutely stymied. Couldn't find anything at all online. Like you, I wasn't even sure what terms to search. If you can post what you ultimately learn from your searching (per the post above), it'll let me keep browsing TD instead of doing something productive like digging for the answer myself. And that'd be a good thing (for me at least).

FWIW, I recall it being a very straightforward process using the old Word '97. We were starting Word from inside Needles (law firm) software. The document would automatically pull some data from Needles (client name / address). It would ask for the date, name prefix (Mr., Mrs., Ms., Dr., etc.), and several other things which could all be typed into the dialog box. From there, the document would be fully generated and could be printed / saved--either in Needles, on the server, or both.

Using macros sounds familiar, but my earlier searching on this yielded nothing.

I can give you guys the actual Macro code that I used for one I did. It's not really complex at all, just a few lines of code.

You'll have to set up your document with the proper fields (ie. make it into a "form"), but once that is done it will automatically update when you change that field, manually or through an input box/macro.
