JUNEAU, Alaska — Alaska authorities say they have shot and killed a black bear that lumbered through the front door of a home in the state’s capital while people were inside.
Juneau police say in statement Saturday that the residents were on the first floor, the same level where officers spotted the bear in the two-story home in the city’s downtown.
Police say the bear appeared briefly in a doorway, and an officer fired a shotgun twice at the animal. It ran behind the home and was later found dead.
Investigators determined the animal came in through the front door. The doorknob didn’t work, so the door could be pushed open easily.
Last week, a bear tried to break into a kitchen in Sitka, south of Juneau, after the homeowner baked a pizza.

I don't understand why they killed it. I've got no bleeding heart but I figure in a place like Alaska, they'd just tranq it and relocate it.

Usually do, depends on the bear and time required to get someone there who can do it. This might have been a repeat offender. Police don't usually carry tranquilizers, and may have felt there wasn't time to get F&G up there.
Rawn Way where this house is located is just a 100 step staircase on a mountainside. Not the easiest of access.
They tranqilzed this one (video) last year, but later put it down because it had become habitual.

Depends on what kind of behavior this bear was displaying inside the house.

I've had them on the deck before but never in the house. I'm not sure how I'd react if one was inside.

An update. This same bear crashed a kids birthday party before invading another home, which may explain why he was shot.

Not sure how I would react to a bear falling through my skylight.

JUNEAU, Alaska — Wildlife officials in Alaska’s capital suspect a black bear might have literally crashed a child’s birthday party before he was shot and killed inside a different home.
The bear had shimmied onto the roof of Alicia Bishop and Glenn Merrill’s home and was walking across a skylight when the bottom fell out Saturday, the Juneau Empire reported (https://is.gd/eUiuGY ).
“I heard this cracking,” said Merrill, who was preparing for his son’s first birthday party. “And the next thing you know, there’s this bear that, I mean, literally, fell right from (the skylight).”
