Has a team ever failed to score a goal in group play, yet still advance to knockout stage?

Don't think thats possible, would have to lose out on goal differential, right?

You'd have three ties, so goal differential wouldn't come into play. If you're Team A and have three ties, Team B beats Teams C and D, and Teams C and D tie each other, you'd advance. Team A = 3 points, Team B = 7 points, Teams C&D = 2 points
ETA: I'm pretty sure that's the only way you could advance without scoring a goal. Someone please correct if I'm wrong.

I can think of one other miserable situation: everyone draws, no one scores, draw lots

That's how my math checks out. I'm wondering if it ever happened?

When was the last time a team went out without even a goal? France in 2002 maybe?

I actually thought of another:
Team A beats Team B 1-0.
Team A beats Team C 3-1.
Team A beats Team D 2-0.
Team B ties Team C 0-0
Team B ties Team D 0-0
Team C ties Team D 1-1.
Final Standings:
Team A: 9 pts
Team B: 2 pts (goals scored: 0, goals allowed: 1, GD: -1)
Team C: 2 pts (goals scored: 2, goals allowed: 4, GD: -2)
Team D: 2 pts (goals scored: 1, goals allowed: 3, GD: -2)
Team B advances with two points and no goals scored.
Team A beats Team B 1-0.
Team A beats Team C 3-1.
Team A beats Team D 2-0.
Team B ties Team C 0-0
Team B ties Team D 0-0
Team C ties Team D 1-1.
Final Standings:
Team A: 9 pts
Team B: 2 pts (goals scored: 0, goals allowed: 1, GD: -1)
Team C: 2 pts (goals scored: 2, goals allowed: 4, GD: -2)
Team D: 2 pts (goals scored: 1, goals allowed: 3, GD: -2)
Team B advances with two points and no goals scored.

Cool. Has out been done?

No idea. Tried a quick Google search but couldn't find it. I'd have to assume no though. First, the chances of a team tying all three games have to be pretty small. Then, the chance that even if a team ties every game, things would play out so it could advance is smaller. And even if that were to happen, the chance that all three ties were 0-0 and none of the three were at least 1-1, 2-2, etc., just doesn't seem likely.

Your question had me curious, so I looked to make sure
The short answer is no. Closest is Italy who topped a group scoring one goal. Most similar is Ireland who made it to the Quarterfinals without winning. Most realistic was in some random two team group in one of the first tournaments with a group stage. The winner of that group, however, scored eight in one

99% sure it has not happened. I think Chile or someone got out of a group with 3 points a couple World Cups ago. I think one team got 9 points and the rest won one game.

Honduras didn't score a goal in 2010.
