Special Forces troops heading to Iraq to advise the Iraqi security forces will not receive combat pay but will have immunity from local law, Pentagon officials said Friday.

"This is not a combat mission, they are not being sent to participate in combat," said Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, of the 300 Special Forces troops ordered to Iraq by President Obama on Thursday.

Consequently, the troops would not be eligible for "imminent danger pay" of $7.50 daily up to $225 per month for service members in areas where they could be at grave risk, Kirby said.

Kirby said danger pay ended for U.S. troops with the withdrawal of forces at the end of 2011, and Iraq currently was no longer considered a combat zone in terms of pay and benefits for U.S. troops.

This is so fricking petty it's damn near unbelievable.

In the future - probably as early as the 22nd Century they will write and talk about the US the same way we do today about Rome, Napoleonic France, the British Empire and they will ask, "How did such a nation lose its status?"

As with many things - the danger was from within - and they didn't even really see it or understand it.

Yeah I guess we should see it on the travel channel very soon as it has become a real honeymoon destination.

That is some bullshite. $7.5 per day isn't much, and that country is currently a war zone. What other military benefits are being denied to these soldiers because they aren't in a war zone. If one of them have to get killed are their death benefits?

Hopefully but the irritating part of it is that we have people making these decisions with disregard to any common sense. As I said the other day, I don't care if a military guy is in the middle of Bosco, La., if he is required to have his weapon with him at all times then he is in harm's way for some reason or else he wouldn't need the weapon.

Yes.

The issue is (as you are well aware), this mistake should have never been made. Never.

Orwellian.

The decision was made purely for political purposes. They did it so they could say that Iraq was no longer a combat zone. But we all know that Iraq didn't stop being a war zone just because we left. Are the personnel from the embassy allowed to go out in downtown Baghdad and party? Does the ambassador get to travel around without a convoy of security personnel? If not then it's a combat zone. Regardless of whether or not we're actively engaged in combat operations .

Nailed it. This was a slap in the face. Plain and simple.

Exactly. As Ali Abu Fucauall said in an interview I saw the other day (translated), "we didn't sign no peace treaty. We're still at war. We will still shoot to kill you."

I don't feel like researching it because I'm doing shite around the house, but I'd be interested to know if State Dept. folks get some kind of imminent danger pay in Iraq. I don't know if they get that anywhere though.

Best thing about this is, we have EPA, DOI, DOJ, et al etc employees who carry and received hazard pay and early retirement benefits for hazard pay. One of the people I directly know who carries has never left their damn office in DC yet they get this perk while our boys in Iraq don't. frick these bastards.
