I was a wee lad at the time, so i didn't watch it. I have watched the highlights and etc. If we had been given the PK and Frings getting a red like he should have, i believe we win that game. The next game we would have played Korea, so my question is do you think we would have advanced to the finals vs Brazil? Would we have won? I do not think we would have won, but i think we would have been there.

it would have resulted in a tie and penalties.

Brad Friedel vs Oliver Kahn. They would have written songs about such a battle.

Oddly enough, I don't know if I can ever recall the USMNT ever in a penalty shootout.

And while Korea is not a soccer power they were playing great in the WC and, with being at home, would have been favored to win that game,

Especially when you consider they had the refs in their pocket. We would have had to beat them convincingly to win.

That was a fantastic tournament. I was 14 and I remember my dad waking me up in the middle of the night every night to watch the games.

to be fair we already had played South Korea. they were in our group and we played to a draw. No telling how that game would have turned out as we'd already faced their crowd and played'em dead even.

To advance to the World Cup semis after the debacle on 1998 would have been nothing short of miraculous.

My favorite goal celebration of all time was the Korean celebration after they scored against us and they made fun of Apolo Ohno. They were so butthurt over the 2002 Winter Olympics short track events.

I was pretty young, but I watched some of it, and I have the goals on DVD (or VHS, I can't remember) somewhere

Perhaps, but that Brazil team was in destiny mode

My favorite games are still beating portugal then mexico in the round of 16 at 2 am...england/brazil was a crazy game. If seaman didnt frick up that ronaldinho free kick it would have made things interesting.

Think we'd have handled south korea.

Which makes the whole "there's no way this team can win the World Cup, we'd have to play seven perfect games" line such bullshite.

Portugal - Great (for the first half, hung on for dear life in the second)
Korea - Adequate showing
Poland - Poor. (Thanks to Korea and the referee for beating Portugal that day.)
Mexico - Very good
Germany - Great
Korea (Hypothetical) - we could have beaten them with a good game and honest reffing. We wouldn't have had to be world beaters.
Brazil (Hypothetical) - not likely, but nobody thought we would beat Spain in 2009, and that turned out okay.

You need to play a couple of great games, and not shite the bed in the knockout rounds.

It would have been a historic run but there is really no way we'd beat, Cafu, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Rivaldo and co.

Had we made the game it would have gone down like Alabama v Notre Dame.

Made that exact point in a thread before the World Cup. Heck, theoretically you can lose more games than you win and still win the tournament (if you go 1-2 in the group stage and advance with 3 pts on GD, and then advance via PKs in all four knockout matches). Obviously, that's virtually impossible, but the point is you don't need to go 7-0 and you're not playing seven juggernauts.

I don't think anyone would say we played particularly well against Ghana, and not only did we get a result, we got 3 pts. I think most would say we can probably earn a draw against Portugal (given the way they played their first match and their absences) by playing a good, but not great, match. And then we can play decently (but not horribly) against Germany, lose by 1 or 2 and advance. Then play a strong, but not great, game against Belgium (maybe we even get a break and Russia upsets Belgium and wins the group and we play them), advance on PKs. And then who knows what the draw is from the quarters on in.
