Is it safe to assume a tie with Portugal would lock us for the round of 16?

Obviously mathematically it wouldn't be a lock, but thinking realistically, would tying Portugal Sunday be enough to breathe easy?

Not really

Germany could beat the US like a drum and Portugal could beat Ghana like a drum.

But we'd still be in a good spot up 5 goals.

Remember, Portugal lost their first game... They aren't settling for a tie. A tie for them most likely means they're out. They will be out for blood sunday.

IMO, no. We can't breathe easy.

All it would take to be knocked out is Portugal beating Ghana by 3 and us losing to Germany by 2. Both of those score lines are realistic.

That's what I said but I have a feeling Germany will throw Jurgen a bone if the US goes into that match with 4 points.

They will still be going after first place in the group.

Germany does not really care for Jurgen. Hopefully they are not mad at us for stealing Julian, Fabian, etc.

If they win by one, we can still be out if Portugal wins by 4.

Which gives the US a much better chance than if Germany beats them 3-0 like they could.

I'd take Ghana +4

And the Chicago Cubs can also still win the World Series this year if they win every game from now on.

Absolutely not. If Germany can beat Portugal by 4 then you better believe they can do the same thing to the US. Not to mention, playing for a tie would probably be the worst thing the US could do. They looked horrible against Ghana when sitting back, but they looked like a completely different team when they had to open it back up.

Anyone think Portugal throws in the towel after a very tough qualifying run and getting drubbed by GER. An early US goal could be the death blow.

Playing for a tie from the start will end in us getting beat bad.

What happens IF Ghana beats Germany? Does that make the Portugal game a must win?

Means we'll have to at least tie Germany if we lose to Portugal.

What's on our side is the nature of this cup. with the possible exception of Uruguay, good teams reeling have crashed and burned so far. If Portugal follows the trend and comes out flat and uninspired... then it's game on baby!

Agree 100%. I don't think the US needs to be overly aggressive because that's when Ronaldo is going to kill you, but they cannot sit back and play for the tie. The US just isn't good enough at keeping the ball to do that for 90 minutes.
