Commercial

I not only think did they paint the wrong picture, but they entirely missed the mark on anything they were trying to say.

Anyone feel the same?

But this has been something that's been occurring for the last decade plus...

Is it a movement to get women into tech jobs?

From the comments section:

Love this. Only 18% of college engineering majors are female. Tell girls they are more than 'pretty'?

I really don't see why it matters what gender the student is.

People talk about lack of women in the workplace a lot of times, but I work with a shitload more females than males.

Not sure what your confusion is--they're basically showing how the words we say to kids can affect and possibly discourage their interests in things. Some people expect girls in particular to act a certain way. It doesn't really have anything to do with their product, but Verizon is trying to do some public service by endorsing the Inspire Her Mind movement.

I know that I personally was discouraged by an LSU counselor from entering an engineering program because it was a male-dominated field, despite high math and science grades in high school. Would I have made a good engineer? Who knows--but maybe that counselor's words helped change my mind about what I wanted to be. (IMO, this has changed a lot in the last 20 years or more, but I still see it sometimes with things my daughter is exposed to.)
