True Detective Creator Imagines 3 Season Limit

Creator/writer Nic Pizzolatto recently spoke about the daunting nature of writing an anthology series like True Detective - especially given the amount of acclaim and attention given to the first season.
While at the Banff World Media Festival, Pizzolatto brought up the pressures of creating a close-ended season. "Every season, I'm essentially creating a brand new TV show," he stated. "It can't have any growing pains like a regular first season. If it works it has to work right out of the box.
That's incredibly exhausting. I mean, the job is exhausting to begin with, but it's doubly exhausting and I'm writing every episode."
"I can't imagine I would do this more than three years," he added. "I mean, I'd like to have a regular TV show. We'll have some fixed sets, regular actors and I could bring in people to help and I don't have to be there every second. It'd be great."
Pizzolatto also spoke about the recent casting rumors surrounding Season 2 which, at one point, included both Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain. "Literally, not a single rumor about casting that has been printed anywhere has any truth to it whatsoever," he said. "I mean that literally. I've seen entertainment reporters say 'My sources say....' There are no sources. There's me and two other guys and they don't even know what I'm doing. ... I've talked to one person about it, possibly, and that has been it. We haven't cast anybody. I have a secret list and that's it."

Nothing wrong with going out on top.

This. Kind of glad they won't ruin it by dragging it on too long.

I really don't understand why more shows follow this formula. There's nothing wrong with it.
Falling Skies on TNT for instance would be epic if they went all in for a few seasons but no, they have to drag it out for several seasons.

Some shows have enough source material or canon to go 7 seasons. Some Comedies for instance. A lot of dramas fall into following tangents of the base story that don't need to be written.
There's enough Star Wars and LOTR potential to have a 20 season tv show.
Lost got fricking weird and could have been done in 3, 4 TOPS.

i'm a huge proponent of 2-4 seasons for almost every tv show
the exception is an anthology series, which, literally, should be able to go on forever.
