Is there a way to shuffle the songs on an iTunes playlist?

I know i can shuffle them within my itunes, but is there a way to shuffle up the list of songs before i put them on my ipod?
basically i dont want the same artists playing back to back. I have 9hours of music on this playlists and want the songs to just be random once they hit my ipod. Is there a way to do this without my doing it manually?
