Our military procurement process is so fricked up. Considering current world events, does anyone else think there might be a need for these in the near future?

quote:

The opponents say the A-10 has to go to save money. But the committee found plenty of money to add for big hardware items and the corporations that make them. The aircraft carrier George Washington got $789 million more than the Navy formally sought for its nuclear refueling and overhaul.

quote:

EA-18G electronic warfare aircraft—of which the Navy formally requested zero—got $975 million. Patriot missiles got an extra $200 million, unsought by the Army in its budget request.

quote:

And perhaps most offensive of all, the committee added $479 million for four unrequested F-35 Joint Strike Fighters, in order to rush them even faster into unjustified production.

quote:

The Air Force claims it must get rid of the A-10 to save money. In fact, the A-10 is less expensive to operate than any other combat aircraft in the Air Force inventory.

quote:

The Air Force claims the A-10 can only do one mission, close air support.

When was the last time our AF did anything other than close air support in the last 15 years? I realize the need to not prepare for the last war, but this is a cheap, effective aircraft that hands down, the best plane for the job.

That sucks.

Any ground-pounders here?

Would you rather have support from an F-16 or A-10?

A-10s are way less annoying than F-16s

You're just saying that because it's featured so prominently in a superman movie

It is a great plane. Is it decommissioned or just no longer in production. We do have a shitload of these planes

How many F-35s do we have so far? Haven't there been huge problems, so much so that the Navy decided to build more FA-18s instead of getting more F-35s?

It hasn't been in production in a long time. It's being decommissioned even though

the service just spent $2.85 billion to extend airframe life by 15 years and to modernize it with the most advanced close support avionics and countermeasures in the force.

Leave it to you to think of something like that.

F-16s are so f-ing loud.

I was working near a base where A-10s were doing touch and go's. I never heard them until they were right on top of me.

My mount was on the catwalk. Even with a red deck. We stay and duck. Taking off 8 ft over my head. Standing in the hottest weather on earth on a slab of concrete with tons of shite on, hearing it non stop. Exhaust fuming over you during high power turns (making it a virtual oven) when you're below deck the constant takeoff and landing thud.

Cool plane, hope to never see or hear one again

I'm also convinced that AF top brass have been bribed to help kill the A-10 by manipulating data.

I bet a bunch of lobbyists made a boatload off those additions, though.

I can't imagine a better close air support plane, I'm admittedly ignorant on the subject. I can't imagine it's a good idea to completely scrap them. Those suckers rain down unholy hell. If there ever was another global conflict (there never will be) I'd want those at my disposal for sure.
