Last year a lot of people on here bashed welter. I have noticed in the last several months a lot of people have been praising him. Why the change of heart? Would you start him?

I would start him but rotate heavily the first few games until it was more clear who the better player is.

Based on last years performance, NO. He may have progressed. I haven't seen much of him. He just has to wanna stick his pads into someone more for me to really get behind him. He plays a little scared it seems.

Not if someone can play the position better. The margin for error in the SEC is too small to afford any team the option of not playing their absolute best players at every position.

Funny to me that people think Chavis would willfully start an all-around inferior player at MLB just because.

Where's the link? I noticed people are talking about wanting Beckwith, but accepting that it might be Welter instead.

Chavis stated towards the end of Spring practice that Welter will likely enter the season as the starter and that Beckwith will push him hard for PT.

Absolutely. I'd start him and then expect him to earn that starting spot each week. If he whiffs on a bunch of plays and finds himself out of position like he did many times last year I would adjust according.
It seemed to me like the light sort of came on for the kid towards the end of last season. I will not be surprised if DJ has a great season and silences the haters. If not oh well, others will step up.

Welter was good for the defense last year because he knew the playbook very well and he was able to guide the young players and make sure they were in position before the play. Those young players have a lot of experience now and know where they need to be. So I'd rather start Beckwith because of his raw talent, plus he has been in the system for two years so he's not a clueless freshman out of high school.

well that's not the sole reason for his suckage, but are you really going to sit here and argue that he's a quality starting LB in the SEC?

This is how I feel.

I don't want to completely discount him because he could be improved. And D.J. not starting necessitates a superior alternative option, which is dependent upon Beckwith's (or maybe Clifton Garrett's) acclimatization to the position. I like the potential of Kendell Beckwith, but right now Welter has a big experience edge.

It could be a rotation that utilizes the specific strengths of each player based on the matchup. That would also provide the added bonus of keeping guys fresh, which can really be valuable down the stretch in close games.

He had a rough year last year, but seemed to start to "get it" towards the end of the season.

Plus he, by all accounts (and awards), had a great spring. Sometimes people improve. It's easy to just give up on him like many have, but Chavis clearly hasn't.
