If they do graduate, 91 percent have to take remediation courses in college because they do not know how to do basic math and school work. Just 26 percent of CPS high school students are college-ready, according to the ACT subject matter tests.

That's why when I see articles ranking Mississippi, Louisiana and other Southern states as last in education, I don't give them a second thought.

$76,000 probably isn't that much when you factor in the cost of living in Chicago. That being said, public schools in that city must be terrible.

So chicago has roughly 22,000 seniors each year. Only 13,200 of them graduate and of those only 1,188 don't need remediation courses in college.

That's insane if a school system can't produce any better than 5.4% ready for college without remediation.

CPS is about what I would expect out of any school system with its demographics.

Clearly, it's not enough. Earlier tenure would probably help, too. We don't want these teachers worried about their jobs, do we?

These lists are nothing more than propaganda to attempt to link poor education with bad teachers pay/weak teachers unions.

Hell, it could be $1 million and not much would change because of the type of students that they "teach." When a culture refuses to value education, then we should not be surprised when the kids that grow up in that culture do poorly in education.

Out of curiosity I Googled the school. The LINK to its website shows that the Paul Robeson High School has more Special Education staff than English/Reading staff. In fact, the Special Education Department has 50% more staff than any other Department.

Chicago Public Schools should be ashamed of the information provided at the PRHS website. I doubt there are very many visits by parents with children attending PRHS.

I agree. I think parent involvement is essential, both at the school and at home. I'd bet at least half of these kids don't do their homework or do a poor job of it and the parent doesn't care.

This is 'No child left behind' - even if they should be.

They would be better served to keep these kids in school an extra hour and a half every day just to do their homework at their desk.
